I have a Tristar CXL model, and the power nozzle is pretty much in bad shape. I wanted to replace the power nozzle with a new one, since I have had the current one fixed several times and have been told it is pretty much shot. I found on greatvacs.com a NEW Sweep n Groom Vacuum Head for Tristar DXL. Does anyone have any experience with this or know anything about it? If anyone has any other suggestions, let me know. I tried EBAY but got nothing but nozzles in very poor condition, so I don't want to waste any more money. The vac is in great shape, so it is worth getting a new nozzle I think. I called tristarusa, but they wanted $300 for a new nozzle. Please let me know if anyone her at this site has any ideas or suggestions for me. You can email me at [email protected] Thanks!

The Sweep-n-Groom nozzle is an excellent nozzle. It uses Eureka's VGIII brush roll with brush stiffeners. It therefore does a very good job of agitating dirt and debris loose from the carpet, while sweeping it up too. The one problem you might run into is with wand compatibility. The lock buttons for Tristar and Eureka nozzles are in two different spots. However, there is a universal wand that I have that has the lock button holes in two different locations. You can still use it to attach to the new nozzle and then use the Tristar wand on top to attach to the hose. You might also just try replacing the motor in your Tristar nozzle, if that's where the problem lies. This should be the motor for it, unless it has the newer geared belt. In that case, you can still use this motor. You'll just need a new brush roll that uses the flat belt.

Here's a tristar CXL PN in good looking condition, even if the innards are a bit iffy, they're far from difficult to repair, it's just a brushroll, motor and belt and a little wiring,

Or if the plastic casing is shot, then there's this:

Or there's the motor mentioned above, brushrolls are easy to come by, and the belt can be replaced with a Kirby or Royal (Metal uprights) belt with ease... :)

If you could describe what's up with your current one, it'd help to find a cheaper solution than to replace the whole thing... :)

yes i would say go with a eureka nozzle that is all I ever use on
my CXL because it seems to make better contact to the carpet plus
the one I use has a headlight

Thanks to all that posted responses here! I took the CXL nozzle to a local vac shop. The FIRST thing he said to me when I walked in with it is 'oh, that thing is VERY old, I probably can't even get parts for it'. Well, I looked him right in the eye and said, well if I can get parts off the internet or directly from the company, so should you be able to! I don't even think he knew who Tristar comapany was. What a jerk. I left it with him to take a look at, then he will call me with an 'estimate' IF he can get parts. What a joke, but I was there already, and he is the ONLY guy in the area who has a shop like this. Let's see what he comes up with...

I recommend a

I recommend a Eureka vibra groomer 3,or a kenmore without the quick release wands, but my favorite one is a electrolux PN - 6 just remove the upper wand sheath and you are ready. I am selling a nice vibra groomer 3 in my ebay store that has the metal brush roll and orange brush strips,I hope to have it listed today.

Go with the Sweep n Groom....

The Eureka vibragroomer III is in my opinion one of the best powerheads EVER made. Belts are inexpensive, around $5 for 2. Plus, you will also have the ability to shut off the brushroll & clean bare floors.

Another alternative is to go with one of the Eureka knock-offs-the "Dust Care PB11". Just enter that into Google, and there are MANY retailers online that sell it. It's even better than the Eureka, as it has a geared belt, & still uses the Vibragroomer III.

Oh, and BTW, there is a metal adapter available to convert the wands to work with any powernozzle. It's what was used on the Eureka Rotomatic design that had the Compact label on them before Tri-Star started making their own. Just stick it into the neck of the new nozzle, put your wands on & presto- ready to go!

My vote is for the Eureka Express style nozzle like everyone else. I have one from the Express canister my mom purchased in the mid 80's and I now use the PN with my central vac. I love Electrolux tanks but this power nozzle cleans circles around the Lux PN. This nozzle will just about pull itself right across the carpet and you can really see and feel it beating the carpet. After 20+ years on the market, there are few power nozzles that I can think of that can match its cleaning ability or its reasonable price.

Psrsonally, I would recommend the original PN upgraded with a generic 4-row VGII brushroll like mine, though that modification wasn't done by myself, but rather the former owner... :)

Not a hard mod to do really, I would try to explain it but I'm typing this on my phone and it's hard enough doing that than typing on here And trying to recall how the mod was done!!!

Rob posted that there is a metal adapter available to convert the wands to work with any powernozzle. Does anyone know who might carry that item, how I could get it? Also, would you happen to know if the cord and plug supplied with the Dust Care PBII that was recommended would fit the tristar? Is it long enough to reach the outlet on the hose, and will the prongs fit into the original hose? These are my concerns about buying any alternate power nozzle that once I get it I cannot just hook it up without alteration.

Mike, sorry it took so long.....

But I have sent you an email reply with all the information you will need. In the meantime, here is a link to the Allegro Central Vacuums website, with the Dust Care PB11, as well as the Wessell Werk EBK340 with standard neck & pigtail cord, which is also a very good option. The website is www.allegrovacuums.com, & they are based in Oakville, Ontario, CANADA.

Hope this helps,
Rob

On an Off Note..

It kind of makes me wonder why the guy at the vac shop you took it to said that it is "very old". If my memory serves me right, isn't the CXL from the early 90's?

Late 80's to early 90's I think, the DXL ran to the late 90's, but was essentially the same machine, but later models had a weaker motor fitted which decreased performance... :)
