Today I went to the Kirby service center with my aunt, and sitting there was a beautiful Hoover 61 with most of the attachments, caddy, and original box. Couldn't leave it there, so for $40 she went home with me!

I've uploaded a video of it on youtube, it's still processing so it will be on later. There's also a bit more of info there.

Can anybody please tell me what year this was made(possibly month and year with serial number provided), and how many were made?

Nice Find Alex!

The model 61 was made from 1946-1950. It was the top of the line model that sold next to the mid range model 28 and the ecomomy model 115. There were only 389,862 of them made, compared to 2,278,594 model 28's. Your 61 looks like it's in great condition, other than the few scuff marks on the base. Congratulations,
Jeff

OOOH thats a nice one! The model 61 is SUCH a lovely machine, even the box is gorgeous.

And start stocking up on brush strips now.

Speaking of brush strips, it has one long and fluffy white brush strip, and one thin black brush strip (could use replacing). I think the black strip is horsehair.

Good news, I hooked up my spare cloth hose from a model 28 to the Hoover Portable today (had to use a little tape to make it stay on), and to my amazement it didn't leak at all! It's just a little stiff, but it's not a big deal. Just happy to have a nice hose for the 61. :)
