This thrift store has been threatening me for a while now. I don't think there is any reason for banning over buying items from a store. now on to why I got banned. I was carrying the Electrolux to the cashier to pay, then the manager says if you buy that and return it I will ban you. they think it's an antique it's not antique yet. The Electrolux works but is a bit rusty. This is the only Electrolux I've ever seen for sale in my town. What should i do

Chat with the manager

Ask him what he would consider it an antique, and explain to him why it wouldn’t be considering age, design ect, plus if you show him of why you know it wouldn’t be considered an antique, Because essentially what he would be doing is banning a mechanic from auto parts store, Plus if he knows that you know that you have a large amount of knowledge about them, Instead of banning you he may respect you

Good luck and don’t get banned

It's because of the Coronavirus. All stores are banning returns on anything to prevent the virus spread. It comes from that false hype that was promoted that the virus lives on all surfaces and things you touch (so do a million other germs).

Maybe you misunderstood them, but if they used that specific tone that you typed, then I'm wondering why they thought to act that way? Bad mood or something? Threatening the customer like that is by all means a big no. I'd leave a negative review on Yelp or Facebook regardless.

I had to fight with a stupid Goodwill manager before for trying to charge me $4 per DVD on a big 40 DVD box set of the TV show "24" (It would have been like $400? way out of control). I kept trying to explain that you do not charge per DVD, it's the entire set, you charge maybe $20 and that's it. She wouldn't listen and started copping an attitude, so I told them keep it. I contacted Goodwill corporate when I got home and told them what happened and gave the names of employees that witnessed it, and when I went back there maybe 3 weeks later - she was gone. The cashier remembered me though and they said she got fired - evidently she had a past history of being rude and nasty to her own staff at that store and they had enough reports filed to terminate her. Sometimes people dig their own holes by how they treat strangers.

You did get a nice Model AE(?) Electrolux though!

So you say this manager has been threatening you for a while now. You must go in the store a lot and buy items. I wonder if they think you are buying items to resell them. Some thrift stores want to sell their items to people in need of low cost used items, but the reality is the thrift store makes money selling the stuff so they shouldn’t care who they sell to and just be glad something is going out the door that came to them free and now they have cash in their pocket for that item.

What a mess. I assume you got the Electrolux and cleaned up that will be a very nice AE Model. I saw one for sale on craigslist outside of Boston just like it and it was filthy...no one was buying it. I thought to myself a little winded and some paper towels or a rag and it would probably sell quickly, it looked like it had spent a lot of time in an old dirty basement or shed or garage.

See if you can try it in the store.

If it runs good, then you should be able to buy it with confidence it doesn’t need much. It has the plastic hose so you won’t have an issue of a leaky hose so it should runs strong.

They may know it doesn’t work and not want it coming back if you can’t try it in the store,

Goodwill and Habitat usually give you 7 to 10 days to return things that are electrical.

I’d take one of these to clean my house with any day over even a Dyson!

Banning?

Well, people get banned from things for all sorts of reasons.
As far as a store... They'd have to have a pretty darn good reason.
I don't think I'd frequent there anymore. We don't HAVE to spend our money OR time where we're not appreciated. There are OTHER stores, shops, vac stores, etc.
Years ago, an old priest said to me, "John, NEVER hang around places where you're not welcome and NEVER bother with people who don't believe in you". A very wise man.
And, I don't. Ever.

Um

There is no reason needed to deny customers.
I worked in retail and was the boss. I refused many customers. I really wasn't bad until I was in area known for being drug addict hotbed. I was on the way to work at 540. I got a call from the cops a burglary in process. It was a drug store and they broke in through the drive thru window. They used a sledgehammer and took about 45 minutes to get the hole. The glass is bulletproof and 6-8 inches thick. Its opening was 24x18 or close to it. The person who entered was 5'2" 100lbs. They stole cough syrup with codeine. They broke into 6 drug stores before getting caught. The state attorney general called the glass was 4200-4500 the drugs was only $300. It was just under $5000 which would be the highest felony theft. Grand theft but second degree. If they took any oxycodone or many other drugs it would've exceeded 5 grand. I don't know if they knew what to get or just got lucky on what they took. Im going to say but it's no intent. If I were to steal it would be the daily delivery the pharmacy gets. The driver has 500k-2 million dollars in medicine. Its like an Amazon van and not armed either. The bank picking up money both are carrying pistols carrying alot less than 500k. Back up story to the robbery. I drove to the store and show up and 30 cops with ak47s with laser scopes. I was on the phone with dispatch to verify it was me. They stopped pointing there guns at me.
I kicked out many customers. I asked a lady to leave on Christmas. She was upset telling me I'm heartless. I said ma am I saw you put this and this in your purse. Im pretty sure you'd rather have your kids think I'm rude than the cops taking you out with cuffs. She gave the hidden items and left quietly. I didn't try to be rude to people. I had a guy tell me I was lucky I was at work he'd kick my butt. I told him I'm salary if you swing I can defend myself. I showed him my car pointed to the camera so he wouldn't touch it. I then said if you want to meet I pointed to an empty lot next to the store. I told him I'm off at 3 I'll go wait in the parking lot for 10 minutes. It was off camera. I did suggest that if he wanted to be his gfs hero he better leave her home. I would only need one punch and I'd have an ambulance standing buy to transport him to ICU unit if he was lucky. Im not trying to come across cocky, a tough guy or a story teller. I have not lost a fight. I have I guess alpha male personality. I got in 2 fights one at school and the kid was slightly bigger but I did a number on him. The other I was outside a shopping center a guy atleast 10 years older was lit. I didn't unload on him. I blocked with one hand the other hit to the body. I don't know maybe I broke ribs but nothing bad. He came towards trying to hug or something as he was winded and I pushed him against my friends hood. The car hit something so it had a pushed up.hood. it cut the guy open a good 12"-18". I watched the news and they were looking for someone in connection with a stabbing. That's not me destroying anyone just one of the 2 fights I have been in.
I only wrote these as they may enjoy one of my stories. The business is private property and you do not need a reason to refuse a customer or have them get warned if they trespass in future they would get a trespass ticket.
I didn't judge or pass opinion on anyone. I trespassed a person who hit my cashier. I also trespass another for threatening harm on an employee. I wouldn't put up with mistreatment of employee's. I didn't treat or let my employees treat anyone I'll willed. I think the manager either got told by an employee or customer to ban you. I have been asked if I tested the vacuum as there is no returns on them. I've never been or seen this happen. The manager or employee had some issue before you came to the register. If you had money tried the vacuum knew you couldn't return it and paid for it I'd see no reason for confrontation. Its employee with a grudge or a manager on a power Trip.
If you want to see upset customers 30 minutes after the pharmacy is closed you get to tell the person there out of luck and can't get pills. That's when you grow a thick skin and be okay with being called every name.
I hope this educates and maybe entertains those who read it.

fDonovan,

Playing devil's advocate ... do you have a habit of returning items to the store, and/or were you in any way rude to the manager (if so, apologize and tell her you'd appreciate her willingness to negotiate)? While there are some individuals that are just plain difficult, often one is treated by others how s/he communicates with them.

Regarding the store's price, consider first of all that those who don't collect vacuum cleaners, likely including the manager, have limited knowledge about them. The rust, lack of original attachments and the users guide would make the cleaner less appealing to many collectors but not to such persons.

The monetary value of old personal-use items (distinguished from famous or extremely rare pieces) is relative to each person's preferences. For example, a vacuum cleaner collector who favors Hoovers would not pay as much for an Electrolux as an Electrolux collector; and even Electrolux collectors differ in their individual tastes—some preferring such details as features or decade styling, design, particular model numbers or model names, et cetera. For a non-collector old vacuum cleaners belong in the trash or in a rummage sale at a nominal price. So, the old adage holds true, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder".

As for the term 'antique', there is no universal definition among sellers and collectors, but it typically refers to an item around 100 years old. Other general age-related collector terms are Depression-Era—1930s; Mid-Century/Retro/Post WWII—1940s & 1950s; Vintage/Vietnam-Era—1960s & 1970s; & Classic/Early Electronics-Era—1980s & 1990s.

Btw, the Electrolux cleaner you photographed is a Model E_Automatic, that was manufactured between 1956 and 1957. You will see the identification tag on a metal plate near the caster (the serial number—a 5-digit production number between a 2-letter series is also on the tag). There was also an earlier non-automatic Model E, made from 1954 to 1956; that is similar-looking but has a removable bag door, wheels/stabilizer, and handle assembly/switch.

In your case, the fact that you haven't seen another Electrolux cleaner for sale in your area should definitely influence your decision to buy. Also think about the fact that older Electrolux cleaners are typically able to be refurbished to new or near new condition with reasonable time and effort.

Keep us posted.

Attached are a Model E_Automatic ad (with optional cord winder) & a Model E ad:

Note that at the time only 2 tools were standard and advertised for 5 uses: the dusting brush/upholstery tool; and the floor, wall & ceiling brush/rug tool. The "narrow space cleaner" (aka crevice tool) was an option which was brought back as a standard tool in the mid-1960s.

Private property

A business can refuse service to anyone for any reason. When I worked retail refused to sell alcohol or cigarettes to people. You would get a $700 fine if an undercover caught you not checking IDs.
If someone had money and wanted to buy something that didn't require IDs I'd sale it. If they returned it I didn't care. The company uses it as a debit on the balance sheet.
People let power go to to their head.

Playing Devil's advocate:
Perhaps the cashier was joking?
Meaning: It's obviously going to need some work, so don't come crying for a refund if you have difficulty. Ha Ha.

Or maybe they're confusing you with someone who looks similar?

This doesn't really make sense. All they had to say was "There's no return on that item". Then write "Sold as seen" on your receipt.

I would avoid them.

Here in the UK, our thrift-stores (charity shops) usually have very poor attitudes.
They take the best items for themselves.
Second best for their friends.
Hide anything decent and list it on eBay.
Consider themselves expert antiques valuers.
Make up prices based on what you appear to be able to afford.

Because they work for free, they think no-one else needs money. They make up silly prices. Their Business Rates (taxes) and overheads are heavily subsidised by us taxpayers. Their Directors are on £100,000+ salaries, and they even set 'sales targets'. There is no "charity". Not even for homeless people who need warm clothing. They're ruthless businesses. Ask them what percentage of profit goes to charity. 5%? 6%?

Wow that's pretty crappy. I mean, in the States, they are all businesses. Sometimes they are attached to a charitable organization, but the store itself is a non-government owned business. I'll grant, they probably do a lot of the same stuff here (like keeping all the good stuff), but the workers are paid employees (at least all the ones I've known). And the company pays taxes to the government, not the other way around. Though, the ones connected to a charity probably don't pay much taxes.
