Hi all,

I have loved vacuums ever since I was a toddler. Not sure I ever lost interest, but I suppressed what interest I did have (probably for some social reason to avoid bullying). It did not occur to me to seek out a vacuum forum! My current fixation is the different categories of vacuums (mostly the form factor and use case scenario) and I have been wondering what can and can not be considered a vacuum (I will search for a thread or post one if one does not exist).

I'll see you around

Welcome aboard! I can relate to what you said about the childhood interest--when I was a kid I knew what kind of vacs my parents, grandparents, aunts & uncles, and friends' parents had, and where they kept them! As for the categories, they generally fall into 4, which are upright, tank, cannister, and hand vacs (although some folks lump the cannisters and tanks together as cannisters). Then there are subdivisions such as bagged or bagless, straight suction or revolving brush, etc. For your question about what can be considered a vacuum cleaner, I would say anything that uses airflow or vacuum as a means to remove dirt from a surface and deposit it into a bag or other container can be considered a vacuum cleaner. Hope this is helpful.
