Someone asked so I will tell it, In 1996 the VCCC convention was in StLouis hosted by Tom Gasko and Ruth Hollander, we, as usual in those days, had the time of our lives, I drove my 1962 Plymouth fury, and David Watters drove his 65 Chrysler 300!,but ,getting back to the story, We were at Toms house on Saturday night, we were all exhausted from traveling and a busy weekend, so Craig Long, who was without a doubt, the most knowledgeable person I ever met on the subject of vacuums, began telling us about his dream of becoming a drag queen, Tom , Clay Floyd and I all rolled our eyes at each other, Because Tanya was there and we were afraid of offending her with that type of conversation, this, you have to remember, was her first convention, and we really were trying to be on our best behavior as She was our first female member, anyhow, he launched into this description of the maid outfit he wanted to wear on stage and how he wanted to pull a 1961 Lady Kenmore Whispertone with him/her!, I forget what he was going to sing but it was equally funny, well, we all ,by this time, were rolling on the floor gasping for breath, which egged him on all the more as he described in very nasal Brooklynese, all he would do on stage...well, when we finally got over that, Tom brought out a new Thermax for us to see, they had just began to get popular at this time, Clay ,who was tired ,picked it up and began describing what junk it was, he shook it while it was running and water sprayed out all over Toms living room to which Clay exclaimed, "Who in hell designed that Rube Goldberg contraption!, I think he should be in hell with his back broke!"..of course this set us all off into another gale of laughter!..so that is the story of Miss Beverly Whispertone!..Craig was a wonderful person who had a great sense of humor and had a quality few of us have, he could laugh at himself, he loved us and we loved him, the world really lost a encyclopedic mind when he died, never did I ask him about a vacuum that he didnt have an answer, he was the reason I became a club member in 1994, he ran an ad in the VDTA news wanting vintage vacs, I called him, and he put me in touch with Alex and John L , and then Mike Hays and Charles Lester,he also first told me of the Lady Kenmore Whispertone and the Apex Strato Cleaner, so that is the story, nothing can ever equal that meeting in Toms living room one hot Saturday night, I will never forget it...Hans Craig
