After reading a recent thread on the longevity of the Hoover PurePower, and how the PurePower may be dropped from the sale's following the new EU regulations, I took a sidewards glance at the Hoover products out there, including the PurePower.

As part of this, I saw a PurePower for sale at Argos, for £79.50. Not one to rush into things hastily, I did a bit of research, which involved reading customer reviews and sifting through the opiniated views of the Vacuumland bunch, on the PurePower, and it's past relatives. I was put off by the excessively powerful motor, and the dreaded PurePower lean, but I also wanted a machine for daily whizzing round the house with, and also I liked the sound of the long hose.

Surely Hoover must have done something right, to produce the cleaner for 17 years, albeit with minor changes. So, I went to Argos, and bought the PurePower. I came home that day with this...

Here are some unboxing photographs.

One big pull and...

... the cleaner pulls out, slight self assembly is needed, the handle unit and carry handle have to be screwed in, but it's only a two minute job to get it assembled.

Photo system...

... it would appear that the photo system isn't working with me, so I'll do it the old way, my apologies.

Underside...

... the rather clean brushroll, with fairly stiff bristles, but it's a noisy brushroll and definately not as efficient as an Activator.

That's you lot!

Well, it is for now. I bought this on the 26th, and have used it a few times, but not enough to warrant a full detailed review. I will be reporting back with my review after a week or so, lets just say not as bad as I thought. Hope you enjoyed, well, there isn't really much to enjoy, but do - and I know you will - leave your opinions and questions below, and I will try to answer them as best as I can.

I have the other one in the Argos book, the Red and white one - its a 2100W - another one destined for the EU scrap heap after September this year, branded a power guzzler.

I do like using it, and despite being made in China, its not too badly made. I will agree about the brushroll noise though, when used on carpet, that area of the machine does vibrate a lot - I think its down to the cheap quality brushroll housings, and no brushroll inner liner. Its about the only decent budget bagged upright left on the market now, with good tools and a long hose, and I hope they come up with a replacement bagged upright when the PurePower is retired. One feature I do like a lot is the soft start motor, which ramps up the power gradually to full speed from switch on. A very successful design, and it was indeed first seen in 1997, but with a 1200W motor - a far more suitable power for a bagged upright. You will notice how much it heats up the room though - its an effective fan heater!

Nice too see some Bagged machines being reviewed. I would have always thought Hoover would just reduce the motor power in the Purepower, & not o anything else.

I cant see them doing that - the Purepower is a very old machine now, and well overdue a replacement, to renew people's interests. I think over the next few months we will see the old 1600W+ machines getting sold off, to make way for a new generation of greener cleaners.

Here's another one I saw the other week - all new and low wattage, from AEG:

Steve...

I agree with you on that, I don't think they will continue making them, which is sad really, as they looked ahead of their time and they still look modern. I was wondering, do they still do the PRC made Panasonic Bagged Uprights? I know they are not as good as their Spanish ancestors but surely they must be good if they have a similar design.

I hope there WILL be more bagged machines after these new EU laws come in, I assume Miele will continue doing cylinder's but we also need more quality bagged uprights.

I do like that AEG as well!

I would assum the old Panny bagged vacs will be on the way out now, as they are over 1600W. There is a replacement for them, The MC-UG522 (below) but its not been popular.

The problem with bagged uprights is that only the UK and the US find them popular (possibly South Africa, Australia and NZ too?). As most of Europe is in love with hard floors, they produce very few uprights, let alone bagged uprights. America produces bagged uprights but most US companies like Simplicity and Riccar currently wont export them to the UK. Kirby still send us a bagged upright, but its not exactly affordable to most people, and we get the Oreck bagged upright.

Of the only other "UK" based vacuum companies, Dyson, as you know only produce bagless, and will never make a bagged upright as long as James Dyson has anything to do with it, and Vax, which produce no bagged domestic vacs now either, although TTI, their owners, do produce bagged uprights for the US market, under the Hoover US, Oreck, and Dirt Devil Brands.

If we in the UK want bagged uprights, we will have to spend more on a premium priced SEBO X or Felix, Miele S7 range (which are also over 1600W), A Kirby, Oreck, or a bagged upright commercial type such as a Nilfisk or a Victor, as there is not much left now in the sub £150 budget sector.

Most other cheap bagged uprights like the Electrolux Powerlite Z2255 or its Zanussi copy, will probably be discontinued come September as they are all over 1600W. It remains to be seen if there will be lower wattage replacements, so its a case of wait and see.

Hope

I hope we will get more BETTER bagged vacuum's after these law's, but as you say, the market for bagged is limited now. It's been too long using bagless for some people, who won't go back to using bagged, so the companies only make the bagged machine's for the few, and not at all in some cases, which is sad in a way, and we know why bagless is more common know don't we???

Well, actually I can see Hoover doing that - they won't make much of a new design unless there's loads of other EU countries who favour uprights over cylinders - and the UK seem to be one of very few who prefer the upright design to cylinder. Either that or they will tart up the Hoover Freemotion upright Green Ray version and put a redesigned bag block and door on the back. Heck of a lot cheaper than designing a brand new model from the ground up, don't you think?

Infact I wouldn't be surprised if the whole Dustmanager range was replaced with rebadged versions of the Hoover Freemotion upright - after all, the Dustmanager Evo is such a model based on the Freemotion with a green colour and fancy paint.

Hoover's Purepower upright did have low motors when they were first made, mind, such as 1200 watts (U3120 eg). I had a Lifetime 1300 watt model and it wasn't bad, but very heavy and the lifetime fabric dust bag outlasted the plastics on the Purepower upright, sadly. Mine had the bag LED light that is now a blanking plate on current and past models.

As for that AEG, I would be more interested in the 700 watt version, the AEG UOGREEEN Ultra at £208 and also posted in previous thread http://www.vacuumland.org/cgi-bin/TD/TD-VIEWTHREAD.cgi?23957

If you do a google pictures search on "bagged upright" there are plenty that come up - but look how many of them are only available in the USA. Most Americans have taste, and still like their bagged uprights. Dyson has not "Assimilated" them into his collective yet!
