This is why I asked ....

Rick,
Glad to see that you got your cleaners and accessories back home safely. I had a weekend with my car full of cleaners and mixers this weekend, but that is a different story. I hope you dont mind me stealing the setting of the picture

I think it looks like the Super Chieftan

Obviously its a different colour and has different runners but apart from the overall shape it was the detailing to the rear of the handle and particularly the switch that made me wonder if there was some sort of tie up

Its a Pheonix Jet Power

My uncle and aunt had one which I am guessing was a wedding present, so that dates it to 1957. I had always thought Pheonix only produced two models (Major & Popular). The only really distinctive thing about them was the flex connector into the machine, which was rounded and and a pheonix (i.e. the bird) embossed into it

I thought my memory had let me down

I only saw the cleaner my uncle and aunt had once, in around 1967. I remembered the shape and the jet power bit, but I thought I had been mistaken and it was a Remocco (Dutch machine) which is a similar shape. Of course now I have to get the Remocco down from my loft to compare ....

Hey Al:

It does look alot like the Super Chief (Universal) Machine. They were sold as a Gleneaton for the Eatons Department store here in Canada so they may well have put the Phoenix name on one for over there too.

It does say "Made In Britain"

Mind you Doug, that means nothing as it was quite common for UK companies to re-use US designs, as with the Eureka/Parnall, Eureka/Morphy Richards (Upright), GE/Morphy Richards (Cannister) and I have not had a chance to take some more Bylock pictures for comparison as I recall you said that their design may have been of US origin too

Funny you should mention the Remoco (Erres) machine. As it happens they were also sold by the Eatons Department Store here under the Eatonia name.

I just finished making one out of two, slightly battered, old machines. Each had parts the other was missing.

The similarity is striking

Even more so on teh European machine which has a different handle. OK, you win - its up to the loft for me tonight to get the Remocco out, I had forgotten its "proper" name.

Anyways, I had better get back to work ....

Whoops!!!!

Al, I am SO sorry! Someone called me today and scolded me severely for not following through on posting pictures. However, now that you've posted yours, this one (and Doug's) looks more like what you are talking about!

Coincidentally, Universal later came out with the Jet99. So there's that word Jet. Universal was made in New Britain Connecticut by Landers Frary & Clark. And that's about all I know!

I really like the runners and color on your machine.

Sorry, Colour.

OH my work is just never done!!!!!

No problems

Rick
It was no problem whatsoever about the pictures I know you have been busy and indeed it was a while till I found "our version". Thanks for posting the pics of the universal - it certainly has an impressive side profile - I get a hint of 1940s or early 1950s automotive styling there.

WHEN you have the chance I would appreciate seeing some more pics of the Super Chieftan please, as that looks great too.

Thanks too to Terry for the scolding :)
Al

3. This is while it's waiting for the paint to cure along with a Lux "G" and the bottom portion of an Atlas.

Wow, Rick -

That is just beautiful. What a great color! How do you get these colors? Do you take the machine somewhere to match the color? Wow, I am so impressed! Congratulations! John L.
