Singer C6, C7 & Electro Hygiene

So right after receiving a well used Singer C6 from a friend, I acquired a C7. The 6 needed the most work, had to add a plug, clean it out and repaint the interior and a bit of the exterior, replace the front castor and rear wheels and finally replace a seal which had melted away. Came with 3 attachments.

The c7 is in exceptional shape, light cleaning and replaced a seal. I believe the braided hose leaks as the suction is diminished. The interior is different in that the tool tray on the 6 is just a box, the 7 tray has special places to attach each attachment. The 7 also has a large plastic cover between the inside of the lid and over the bag chamber. It also came with attachments.

Lastly, a lady called and offered free an early Electro-Hygiene. The hose was stiff which I trashed, but I kept the hose end. Just one floor brush was with it.

Is there an Eureka bag that fits these best? The H bag does not stay put completely.

More on the C6 & 7

today I decided to try out the hose I got with the C7 on the 6. I am pretty sure after I added an electrical plug the motor sounded great. I wanted to see if the hose in fact leaks because when I tried it on the 7, it was weak.

I attached it and of course it fit, BUT the motor sounds terrible. So back to the drawing board.

I received the bags and was astonished and the size of the bag and the thick ring/collar glued in place to fit onto the bag opening. Tight fit using surface friction to help hold the bag in place. Reminds me the Lewyt Speedsak. With the original bags, I will be able to reproduce the bags. The size bag I am thinking will work are the Oreck XL's. I have a large supply of these. As soon as I find a source for the cardboard rings, I will be using Hot Glue to adapt bags for use.

I will be attempting to manufacture a machine hose end for the 6 using the existing hose.

The motor in them are unique to me. More later.

The C6

I pulled the motor yesterday. I have little experience with motors, but I thought I would see if I could fix it. I ran into problems with getting the nut off that holds the fans in place.

I took it to my friend at the local vac shop who told me what to do. Suffice to say, I got the nut off paying very careful attention to the assembly sequence.

Top bearing was fine, bottom was the problem. It is clear the bag had burst and that they the owner was vacuuming up fine dust, because the whole vacuum was filled with the stuff. The bottom bearing was choked with it. After dusting it, using WD40 to "clean" it, dried the residue and finally I used blue bottle 3in1 oil. When I was done the bearing rotated smoothly.

I mounted it back into the vac, wired it up, and fired it up. Huge improvement!

This motor had been worked on before. The evidence was the fan shaft end with the screw driver slot, was badly stripped. Secondly, the fan housing had duct tape wrapped around it. That is why I had trouble removing the fan nut. As for the duct tape, since the fan housing was tightly snug, I did not re-tape it.

I used grease on the top bearing and 3n1 oil on the bottom.
Please let me know if this will be okay. I will mention the bottom bearing had a felt washer. Could this have been there to hold some oil?

After reading some threads about motor lubrication, I think I am going to re-do the bottom bearing treatment.

I wish I had heard from one of the motor repair experts.

Use 3 in 1 oil for brass bushings and bearing grease for bearings.

since both were bearings, I did grease them.

I worried about the fan housing and fans/washers and such getting out of sequence if it was bumped, that I moved quickly to reassemble the motor. I will mount it back into the vac sometime Monday.

I got distracted because someone gave me an Electrolux Ambassador canister which they were told was a bad motor. when I disassembled it, they were sort of right. The nut holding the fans in place had come off and both fans got mangled.

I will be looking for replacements...if that is possible, this week. I already had a hose and maybe one wand. But no PN, 2nd wand and accessories.

Update, mission accomplished!

WARNING: this post may offend Oreck fans, for that I apologize. Also excuse me for using bags meant for other vacuum cleaners.

Even after I got 4 NOS bags, I was reluctant to use them as there is no guarantee I will ever find more. This passed week I thought about a way to mfg. bags that would fit like the originals.

I knew I could use upright vacuum bags for the size and fit, but I could not figure out how to reproduce the cardboard collar. The originals were thick walled to provide a secure surface for the glue to stick to the ring and the bag. I looked through my bag supplies hoping to find a bag with a membrane that would help hold on the bag collar hold to the receptacle. No luck. But I did have a huge quantity of Oreck XL bags that would work.

Today I found a packet of cardboard tubes that I hoped would and ended up working.

First the bags, I carefully peeled off the collars exposing a long narrow hole. I cut up another bag to create patches. In addition I cut another thinner strip to put inside the hole. This second strip allowed me to freely spray 3M adhesive onto the bag and provide a inside and outside patch.

Next, cutting a roughly 1/2" ring of the cardboard tube, I hot glued the bottom, placed it onto the bag, and finished running a bead of hot glue to more fully secure the ring to the bag.

Worked! Hope you find this post useful.
