Shop Vacs on carpets

Do you think a Shop Vac will clean a carpet well if it had a power nozzle? I always wondered this.

I actually did kind of try this. I have a Kenmore Home Cleaning System, and I found out that they actually made a dry vacuuming power nozzle for this which intriqued me. I got one on eBay. It's not a real heavy nozzle or particularly aggressive brushroll. But I tried it and it seemed to pick up a pretty good amount for the small area I vacuumed. The vacuum seems to have good airflow so I think this would make a good deep cleaner regardless of the brushroll being aggressive.

Actually, the power nozzle I'm told uses the same brush roll as the Singer/Kenmore Twin Fan uprights did.

So have any of you tried a Shop Vac for carpet vacuuming. I remember Shop Vac did actually offer such a thing, and of course some dry only Shop Vac type vacuums had them, like the Electrolux Commercial models.

There are a few different sizes of hose for shop vacs, if you get the one with the 1.25 hose end and pair it up with the Volt or Centec battery powered nozzle I don't see why it wouldn't work.

I had an Oreck clone made by Shop Vac called the Easy Lift. It was my first bagged vacuum and I got it when I was around 7. It was a direct air upright with a good brushroll and quite a bit of airflow. Unfortunately, it was trashed when the handle broke off of the base.

Shop Vacs usually have powerful motors so they shouldn't really have a problem on carpets. Now in my opinion, I wouldn't use a Shop Vac for inside a house unless if it's for either construction or renovation. They're big and bulky to maneuver around but worst of all is the filtration. The only Shop Vacs that I would accept for home use are the All Around models but I would only use them for small or quick pick up jobs. If I were to consider getting a powerhead for any Shop Vac really, I would just get one of the turbine ones because I wouldn't have to get extension cords to plug the powernozzle in.

Are the All Around style shop vacs quieter than the larger ones?

Also my Kenmore Cleaning System with the power nozzle has the setup where the power nozzle cord has to run up the wands and hose and plugs in where the pump motor or Spraymate plugs in on the top of the vacuum.

So to change attachments it's kind of a hassle, since you have to unclip the cord from the hose and reattach the solution tubing and Spraymate cord to change back to shampooing from dry vacuuming.

Well for filtration you could Upgrade to a cartridge filter and a high filtration bag my 16 gallons Shop Vac has the cartridge filter and no dust comes out the blower port i did use it whit a power nozzle but i had clip the extension cord to the hose and no problem at all .
Or option 2 is add a electric hose to it whit a adapter and plug the cord of the electric hose in the extension and add the shop-vac to the extension so both come on at once thats how i had mine done .

ALSO mine moves well over floors and rugs whit the 4 casters and the 24 foot hose is a joy to use . I really love my big shop vac 16 gallons beast .

Unfortunately they don't make cloth bags for any of the All Around models. They do have a cartridge filter on the All Around Plus but I don't like those filters. Plus there's no foam, electrostatic or HEPA exhaust filters on any of the models. That's totally unacceptable to me because I now have an allergy issue.

Also I don't like hoses where you would clip extension cords onto them. Had one on a Fairfax that I used to own and I never liked that feature. I'd rather have a hose that's already electric.

And like I said earlier, the other Shop Vacs are way too big and bulky to use inside for me personally. That's great that yours works well for you inside but I still wouldn't to me. Plus, there's a big chance that those bigger models would scratch either the floors, the walls, or even the furniture because the wheels are plastic and they don't have bumpers around them. If I were to use something as a main vacuum that looks and works just as well as a Shop Vac, I would rather use a Filter Queen.

Oh i see well my 16 Gallon Shopvac is my bigggggg vacuum whita long 24 feet hose i use it for dry wall and wet pick up or BIG messes yes its great whtia paper bag and cartridge filter it works for me .My daily driver is my Compact C 9 tho

I use my ridgid wd0670 vac with hepa bag & hepa pleated filter & a electrolux pn1 (at home) or ridgid 6000rv (commercial/industrial version of wd0670) with a turbo nozzle (cleaning apartments)

I've been using the ridgid 6 gal vac more due to snow & ice salt being tracked in & for cleaning out the woodstove & fireplace. Its my only other vacs i have until i get to repair my compact c9

well what you would need is the allergen cartridge filter and high filtration bag offered on the shopvac website about the wheel no they won scratch the floor mine never did .For the hose damazing the floor do like the central vacn and usea hose sock to protect furniture .Some shopvac filters are hepa at canadian tire or shopvac site havea look o n shopvac .com..

Here's the setup I have. The Cleanmore shampooer/wet/dry vac with optional power nozzle. I was told this uses the brush roll from the Twin Fan upright but not sure.

I had to modify the Cleanmore to take bags since this model didn't use them. I used a 2-1/2 to 2-1/4 adapter to mount the Shop Vac type bags. The later models used bags though, but this just uses a cloth filter which wasn't included.

To clarify with my previous post. The All Around models are the ONLY Shop Vacs that I would accept to use for inside because of the sizes. No, they do not offer cloth bags for those models. Believe me, I was in the market for one of these since we just bought ourselves a new trailer over the summer and I even done research on them during the time. Unfortunately they got crossed off the list because filtration was one of the issues. And the cartridge filter still wouldn't solve the problem for me. Like I said, I don't like those filters. And I need a filter that goes after the motor.

Yes, they can scratch floors because the wheels are plastic. Now I wouldn't say all floors because there are some like yours that wouldn't likely happen and as long as you're careful. It's also not just the wheels but even the attachments since they're plastic as well.

A sock hose still wouldn't solve the problem. In fact, one of my walls still scars from a wet/dry that scratched some paint off when we did some renovations years ago. It wasn't from the hose but from the tank! Had it had a bumper on, it likely would've looked different. That's another reason of why I wouldn't use a big Shop Vac inside and another example of why I don't like canisters.

Again, that's great that you like using yours inside but not everyone would.

Shop Vac does make this. It's straight suction, no brushroll, but it works on carpet and is indoor/outdoor. Shop Vac must have hardly marketed it because it seems to fly under the radar for alot of people even though it's been made for maybe 20 years? Dayton and McCullough have also copied this chassis and rebranded it.

Used to have one of those Shop Vac Shop Sweep vacuum.The plastic impellor didn't really do a good job of mulching unless it picked up dry leaves.Metal chips or shavings would wear it out quickly.I used it to clean two walkways in front of my house-the fan wore out!At one time a METAL version of this style vacuum was made-there is an ad for it in an old "Bobbin" sewing trade magazine I have.The ad touted the machine as good for picking up fabric scraps from sewing room floors.Can't remember the brand-the magazine dates from the '80s.Would like that metal version!Now I clean the walks with a cordless Kobalt leaf blower-works GREAT!!!
