Has anyone had experience with Scotchguard carpet protector? My white carpet is a pain to keep clean downstairs due to the amount of foot traffic and pet use it sees,  even with multi-daily vacuumings. I can go about 2 weeks between deep-cleanings before the carpet begins a show a brownish-grey hue. Would Scotchguard prolong this change in color?

White carpeting ...

... my parents have had -- wall to wall - in both their living and dining rooms since 1983. My mother has kept it remarkably clean, despite, over the years:

-- 3 cats

-- 1 dog

-- 24 kids babysat from 1984 - 2002

-- 4 grandchildren

-- 30 years of giant family parties (90+ people) at Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, graduations, weddings, and various other events.

The trick is:

-- Not having the white carpeting in super-high traffic areas. Their house is big enough that they have hallways and foyers; you don't walk into the living room or dining room unless you want to go into the living room or dining room; those rooms don't get cross-traffic to get to other rooms

-- 3x weekly vacuumings

-- Wiping up spills immediately

-- Coming to grips with the fact that your white carpeting will never ever stay pure white.

My mom's house's upstairs is almost all white carpet and it was stain resistant when it was first put in when the house was built. After a year Chem Dry of Stafford cleaned it and applied Scotchguard and it worked well. It did wear off after a while and we didn't get professional cleaning anymore. But if you spilled something it would sit on the surface for quite a while before soaking in. At my dad's house I used Scotchguard in front of the front door and in a couple other areas a few months ago. It doesn't seem to make much of a difference. At my mom's house I applied Scotchguard in my brother's bedroom because he lets one of the dogs in at night sometimes and she does have accidents in the night. It hasn't made much of a difference.

I'd say that professional applications of Scotchguard work well but DIY applications don't work a well.

A word of warning about Scotchguard ...

The chemicals in Scotchguard have been shown to cause biochemical and cellular level damage, birth defects, cancer, damage to the brain and nervous system, and organ system toxicity.

And that's not from INGESTING those chemicals -- that's from simply breathing in their off-gassing.

Scotchguard also makes your rugs and carpets SUPER-flammable.

You're much better off springing for 100% natural wool, which resists stains even better than Scotchguard-protected synthetic fibers.
