So I've got a storage building in my back yard that I affectionately refer to as the barn and I've been looking for a dehumidifier to stick in there to address a minor mildew problem. The only thing is every one I've seen at area thrift stores is missing its water collection tub and without that it's pretty much useless. I even found one in my parents' basement and even it was missing the tub. I thought about grabbing that one--an early '80s vintage Kenmore--and trying to find a replacement tub but the best price I could find on one was a whopping $56!

Last night, my search ended when I found a Kenmore deumidifier at a nearby Goodwill store, complete with its tub and identical to the one at my parents' house. I didn't get it because I couldn't read the price tag without my glasses and they were closing up, so I went back today--with my glasses--and bought it for $15. I figured even if it didn't work, I'd be well ahead of the game since the tub would also be compatible with the one at my parents'.

As it turns out, it works great. Two hours after I turned it on, the tub was half full of water. Guess I'll be emptying it on a daily basis. Good thing it turns off automatically when the tub gets full. I'll probably go ahead and grab the one from my parents' house, just to have a spare or maybe I'll transfer the tub to it and let the one I just bought be the spare. Either way, I win.
