Sanitaire S675 - changing bag type

This might sound like a bad decision, but can you remove the ST based tubes and zipper cloth bag and install a shake out bag on this vacuum? I believe this is the same vacuum as the Sanitaire SC888, which is still being sold. They both have the ST bag tube. I believe the zipper bag has a screw in adapter at the bottom. Would I require some adapter to get the shake out bag working with the S675?

I'm planning on using this vacuum for commercial use and I'm not sure if using ST bags will be cost effective due to constant replacement. I also saw that the ST adapter/tube reduces the CFM of the vacuum. That might not be good for the use I need the vacuum for.

At the very least, can I take out the ST tube and use Eureka F&G bags? Would I need to buy the spring that would hold the bottom of the bag to the F&G based tube?

You should be able to replace the whole bag assembly by just unscrewing the 4 screws connecting the bottom of the bag to the motor base. Unless you have a really old model, these parts are pretty much interchangeable. Why not bring your bag into a local vac store to confirm that the base of the replacement shakeout bag is identical and installs with the same 4 screws?

Just beware of any sales person trying to get you to buy a whole new machine....if they try to sell you a new vacuum, walk out and go to another Sanitaire dealer.

Or you could just call up Sanitaire to find out which shakeout bag is compatible with your model. They also have bag assemblies with a plastic dirt cassette at the bottom of the bag - easier to empty...

Thanks eurekaprince. That's a helpful tip. I'll see if there are dealers nearby that can help me out with this and I might shoot Sanitaire a call. Since this model has been discontinued for a while now, I'm a bit worried they might not have the most accurate information or any information about what shakeout bag would be compatible.

I didn't even know there were different types of Sanitaire shakeout bags. I had always assumed they were all the same. I also want to avoid going to a local dealer because I have a feeling they will try to upsell me things I don't need or not be interested in helping me unless I'm guaranteed to buy something from them.

I should be receiving the vacuum soon and I have 1-2 leftover shakeout bags that I use for other models. I'll find out once I get the vacuum if I can just swap the bags. I just wanted to make sure of things before I opened the box and took everything out, so I decided to ask here before doing that.

I'll leave an update once I get the vacuum in case others are interested in replacing the ST/F&G configuration with a shakeout bag with this model or similar Sanitaire models. I'm doubtful there are many out there looking to do that, but who knows.

Here is a Sanitaire with the EZ Kleen Dirt Cup…it installs with two screws and should fit your 675. Just check with Sanitaire to see if they still sell these dirt cup assemblies separately…..

Swappable parts...

Yes, there are a couple of different mounting systems for Sanitaire bags. A lot of the dump bags are held in place with a rotating latch, similar to but way smaller than a window latch. This makes for very quick and simple removal and replacement. I believe the the factory F&G and ST bag assemblies are held in place with screws as they do not need to be removed. At least this is the case with my S645, which has a factory F&G setup. The cool thing is my two Sanitaires were made some 30 years apart but have many interchangeable parts. You can rebuild one with OEM parts pretty much any way you want.

My sense is that converting away from dump bags to disposable filter bags is a far more common practice. I did this with my SC686 (early '80s model) a little over a year ago and haven't looked back. The conversion kit I used included a modified dump bag with the latch assembly with a zipper and F&G adapter added. The switch-over took about a minute, literally, and is just as easily reversible.
