So, at the risk of this subject already been addressed multiple times and I missing it-

What is the real deal? How does one know when to use a knurled belt and when to use a standard one? I think it has to do with whether ball bearings are involved and/or how many bristle rows there are? Speaking of which many of the brushes I have are broken into 4 subset angled brush rolls with stiffeners and I have a few without stiffeners. Is there a way to tell if a brush roll has the bearings or not? Then there is the filter queen roller from the power nozzle on my Royal 4250 canister tank. So, when is it preferred to use a knurled belt?

Also I would like to know what the applicable belts are called by style. I hear terms like Style 8 or Style 1 belt etc. Not sure how to correlate that to a brush roll or upright model. What is the style for me?

I try to preserve belts by relaxing them off the motor spindle so I don't wear them out. Then my wife gets mad because the vacuum won't work when she grabs it!
Anybody else experience that?!
I have the following Royal models:

1. Royal 4000- 2002 (Jan. Plant A Cleveland)
2. Royal 886- 1994
3. Royal 9700- 1990
4 Royal 9700- 1994
5. Royal 4250 canister-1992
6. Royal Prince 1978
7. Royal Prince 1989

Thanks for any help! Still feeling like a rookie!

Bill,

In order:
Model 4000 - use 1672260001 (Style 8) belt
Model 886 (1994) - same
Model 9700 (1990) - use 1044260001 belt
Model 9700 (1994) - use 1672260001 belt
Model 4250 - use 1598260001 belt
Model 501 (1978) - use 1157260001 (Style 1) belt
Model 501 (1989) - same

My two Royals - models 880 (1985) and 786 (1987) - both use the 1044260001 belt, even though the original factory belt for both machines at the time was part no. 1043260001.

Thanks Ben!

I will print your list and hang it in my work area for reference. You are truly a savior for all of us and I/we are grateful for the wonderful support that you and so many others provide!

Ben,

Out of curiosity, why would the same Royal model (9700) use two different belt part numbers? Maybe I am missing something! Seems I have to use a different belt for my Royal 4000 and 886 and 1994 Royal 9700 but for the 1990 I would change to the #1044260001 belt. Kinda sucks I have to stock two different ones. Thought they might be interchangeable but I want to do what is appropriate.

Still wondering what scenario brings a need for the knurled type. Not sure I understand when that type would be appreciated for use and when. Thanks!

Bill
