Interesting, As Far As It Goes....
....But Consumer Reports doesn't do very much looking into predicted reliability and ease-of-repair issues any more, which I think is a shame.
I'm sure the Kirby rating is pretty fair, and if a Sentria owner needs parts or service years down the road, it's a very decent bet that Kirby will be there for them.
But that Kenmore Progressive rating as a Best Buy? Have these people EVER tried to get a tricky part for a six or seven-year-old Kenmore vac out of Sears? Middle Eastern peace accords are easier to accomplish. I would also question ease-of-repair for Dyson, Eureka and TTI Hoover in years to come - are they REALLY going to stock spares for all those fiddly plastic parts?

I am surprised to see Consumer Reports is even mentioning the Kirby on this list. The Sentria is always quite low on their list. Now they are putting a T-Series on their recommended list? In the 2007 book, Hoover(which were still owned by Maytag at the time) was the forth most repaired brand. Their views sure have changed.
Kirby's maybe tanks. Thats becouse a kirby is built to last longer than it takes to wear out a belt on it. The reality is it is the last vacuum you would really ever need to buy.
How ever in todays society many people have to have something new and so called improved every year or two. Hence the huge market for disposable vacuums. That is not to say that any product can't be tweeked or shouldn't be. It is just that some of the "improvements" are more hype than actual improvments.
Not mention it has to weigh less than a dinner plate and drive it's self forward and reverse with no assistance from the user. And for god's sake it better not leak a speck of dust or carbon from the motor or you will die of cancer from using it.
Ever wonder how your parents, grandparents and great grandparents ever suvived with out all the things we take for granted or how they lived well into there 90's with out air purifiers, hand sanitizers or a hepa filter attached to every thing that creates even a slight breeze????

I was just thinking about the durability of the Kirby and how amazingly well built the Kirby is today when I was cursing at the Riccar 1500 P and Simplicity S38 vacuums I worked on today. When I pulled the motor out of the S38 and showed it to my coworker, I didn't think he was going to quit laughing. To think some sorry sap paid over 1000 for that tiny chinese motor! The wands and clips on both of the units were cracked or broken. Now the Miele I worked on today?....whole different story there. Motor was caked with dirt/dust, and still pulled over 100" of lift on a suction gauge!

that is not the case. Although on the recent paperwork sent to me by Simplicity, the production of the power nozzles was moved to St James. I believe they may have a line of canisters now made (or assembled) in the US, but there are a whole bunch of chinese made Tacony units out there, and I am definitely not a fan. Looking forward to playing with the US made (or assembled) Tacony canisters.

Why isn't the rainbow on that list? I'd love to see the stats on it. I've used a kirby that was over 20 years old at the time and still outcleaning the newer machines. In fact, I'm going to find out what my mom did with it. If she still has it somewhere, its going in my collection. I'm pretty confident that with my 2010 rainbow I will not need another vacuum any time soon.

i believed rainbow was most reliable for canisters. when I saw older CR magazine but not sure. As Aerus I guessing not enough info of reliabily from owners??

....About Aerus/Lux, but CR has always had it in for Rainbow. Their position has always been that water filtration works no better than other methods, and that the cleanup after vacuuming is too much.
I am not agreeing or disagreeing here, just reporting CR's position.
