Relative merits of Hoover bottom-fill vs. top-fill bags

I've grown up (almost 70 now) with Hoover Type C bags in various uprights.

I bought a U4137 a few years ago but don't use it much. It did not come with bags. Stupidly, I tried to use Type C bags pulled down over the fill tube. What a mess!

I guess these vacs used a Type A bag? What's supposed to hold that circular bag opening on the fill tube? If I'm not mistaken, Dirt Devil Type U bags work OK?

Has anyone gone the other way and bought a Type C bellows & tube and converted a top-fill vac to a bottom-fill?

Actually, yes.

Some folks have converted a top fill to bottom fill. The early Convertibles had a rubber sleeve. It stretched and ripped. It was later replaced with a hard rubber 'belt'. There has been much discussion over these bags. Some have no concept (pardon the pun)of how to change them. I'm going to have a friend help me make a little video soon about these bags and to demonstrate the suction on numerous models.Naturally, some cleaners have more tool suction than others. But, just how much suction does one need? I hope there will be no bashing, but no guarantees, I guess. Would anyone care to see a video of my machines used in my own home?

Dirt Devil type U bags are not the same and cannot be successfully substituted for type A Hoover bags. Top filling bags are much preferred for many reasons. The first Convertibles to use type A bags, the collar of the bag slid down into a holder on the fill tube. The fill tube was quickly changed to the type where the disposable bag collar allows the entry of the angled end of the tube into the hole of the bag making the connection much more air tight than the first design.

Hepa Cloth type A disposable bags are available and recommended for all Hoovers that use them.

The collar on the DD “U” bag might be a little too big. DD “D” bags will work. Why would you want to do that anyway? Every time I turn around I see generic and sometimes genuine A bags in thrift stores and hardware stores. Hoover A bags are still widely available.
