Hi everyone. So I am in the market for a new vacuum cleaner. My entire home 2400 sq ft is either hardwood or luxury vinyl plank flooring. I had originally bought a shark flex duoclean and it was a terrible decision. No pet hair but 2 adolescent girls and a wife with lots of hair. Also lots of dirt, grass, etc. makes its way into our home as they love to come inside without wiping their feet or taking off shoes. They're kids. A couple of small throw rugs and that is it. We don't have any severe allergies. Bagless does not bother me. I don't want to spend much money 200-250 max but would like something that can at least do a good job and have good suction. Recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

My honest recommendation is to go to a vac shop and see if they have anything used they could sell you. Your price range for anything new I believe would leave you with the box store products that you already have had a poor experience with.

I recommend:

A lightly used Aerus Electrolux canister. It will fit in your price range or slightly above and will last a long time and perform well. They use bags but the bags avoid the problem of filters that clog as every time you change the bag, all the dirty parts are changed. Dirt capture is excellent. It should be equipped with the hard floor tool for cleaning the floors and you will be able to get under furniture and everywhere without issue. It’s a very versatile machine and highly reliable and very well built and won’t fall apart in 5 years. New they run 1k but used 200 to 400 on eBay. Might even get a good deal on craigslist. I am not talking about the newer Electrolux that was sold after 2003 in stores like Lowes and such but the older bullet shaped Electrolux canister which is now called Aerus as the name changed in 2003. Many of these machines that were made 35 40 yahoo or more are still going strong.

I recommend a refurbished one and one with a rubber hose as the rubber hoses last compared to the old braided ones.

Even new, it will be worth the money because if you buy new it will last 5 or more times longer than your
average Big box store machine. Check out their products at aerusvacuums.com.

I grew up with this product and have experienced many different vacuums and always end up coming back to my Aerus/Electrolux products for durability, versatility, and ease of use. The products really were built on the commercial grade of quality, the plastic is lexan which is nearly indestructible.

Do you really like to vacuum?

My guess is that you're probably looking for something that's easy to live with, easy to use and highly effective.

I only asked that question because you never know what kind of recommendations you'll get when you ask online. Not everyone has the same "vacuuming styles", preferences for the same types and brands of machines, or even the same fondness for what others consider to be a mundane housekeeping chore. If this sounds like a disclaimer, that's only because it is: We are vacuum collectors and most of us LOVE to vacuum - probably more than we should. We love to take in the unique features of different brands, sometimes we're a bit myopic and tend to prefer one over the all the others.

I suggest that you look around before buy your next one. Check out a few videos on YouTube of the different models and brands. There are plenty of private individuals who have made demonstration videos of the various machines in real world situations. It's important to see the good, bad and ugly of each machine.

There's nothing wrong with the Shark brand, as long as you understand that you'll be performing routine maintenance on filters, because these machines are bagless. The Flex Duo Clean model you chose probably isn't substantial enough to pick up the kind of dirt that makes its way into your home on a biweekly or daily basis. Look at one of their full-size uprights. Many of them now have anti-tangle brush designs and even fluffy heads for the bare floors. The Aerus/(original Electrolux) suggestion isn't a bad one either, but I strongly suggest that you see it in person at a vacuum shop that sells multiple brands.

Get a dependable lightweight German-made Miele canister with a turbo brush for your area rugs. Quiet, powerful, great filtration, and a wide assortment of optional tools. If you want a German-made canister vac with an extra-long 40-foot cord, get a suction-only Sebo D1 canister. It’s got a huge bag and also lots of optional accessories including a turbo brush for your area rugs. Add a cordless Swiffer Vac to the Miele or Sebo canister for quick everyday pickups - an amazing little electric broom for only $50!!! :-)

my suggestion

A Miele straight suction canister is a great idea, the Sebo D1 is also excellent, I have it but I don't think they are available anymore unless you can find one used. You didn't mention whether you prefer a canister or upright, you don't have a lot of carpet so a straight suction cleaner would work fine. I would suggest you also look at the Perfect c105 commercial canister, this machine has a 40 foot cord and it's very powerful, I got one last week and it's awesome.

A new bagged straight suction canister would be best

A Eureka Mighty Mite would do the job but they have plastic wheels which would scratch hardwood or luxury vinyl plank floors. A Simplicity Jill would also do the job. The Perfect C105 would be my top recommendation for your price range. But my overall recommendation for a budget straight suction canister vacuum would either be the Miele C1 Classic Pure Suction or the NaceCare James JVP180.

Thanks for all the info. Decided to spend a little more money and went with the Miele C1 Turbo Team. Miele has 20% off all vacuums right now so it was 319.00. Getting delivered today and honestly excited to get it out of the box and put it to work.

You made an excellent choice!!

Be sure to keep an open mind about that turbo rug nozzle because they are not a perfect fit for every household. They perform at their absolute best on high speed, with a clean bag. The speed of the brush turning will start to slow down as the bag fills or if hair becomes wrapped around the brush, but it is simple enough to remove the brush for cleaning. With your particular model you will always have the option to upgrade to the electric hose, wand and electric power nozzle if you think that the turbo nozzle isn’t enough.

A good choice

That was a good price and a good choice and seems to have been about the best selection for your budget and glad you upped it a bit to get quality that you seem to demand. They are quiet and pretty durable. I’d like to have one at some point in my life and only have ever briefly used one but thought it was far better than other priced similarly. A lot of people that had and liked the quality of Electrolux in the past have Miele’s now including an Aunt and Uncle and they bragged about it. Hopefully it will work out well for you. I’m not a fan of turbo air driven roller brush nozzles as they tend to stall or slow on thick carpet or not be as effective at deeply scrubbing the carpet but since you don’t have much carpet it might do fine on your smaller amount of carpet you do have. Best of luck and let us know how you like it and what you do or don’t like about it when you get it and have used it over time.

And remember to read the manual more than once and keep it and refer to it at least annually the first few years...you’ll forget things it tells you over time and will refresh you on its versatility and options for use in addition to not only directing you on the correct way to assemble and operate it. I’m always amazed at how many people don’t realize that a canister is designed to be able to use all the attachments with or without the wands which is what makes a canister so uniquely versatile.

My Mom always had her Electrolux manual in the box with the machine and I used to look at it periodically and it would show other ways in which the tools could be used beyond what I saw Mom using them for.
