Got another vacuum from Goodwill auctions today! This one being a Fair-Fax from (what I think to be) the 80s. Don't have a whole lot of info on the machine other than a few google searches which are how I found the age of the machine. It's incredibly well built and runs great though It does need a replacement belt on the powerhead. From what I've heard Fairfax is still around making (from what I can tell) to be a very similar, if not identical, machine with a Wessel-Werk powerhead.

If anyone has any info on this thing, I'd love to hear it!

Some

I know the power nozzle was made by eureka and rebranded. The belt fits kirby uprights, royal, rainbow and eureka power nozzles.
I don't know much other than their similar to filter queen.

There was one of these in the basement at my parents' house ten or fifteen years ago. I'm not sure what its story was. It was just shoved in a corner and there was so much crap down there I couldn't even get close enough to it to take a good look at it, much less try it out. I never saw it in use and it eventually just disappeared. I always thought it looked pretty cool but that was long before I got bitten by the vacuum bug.

Filters and such

They're certainly not similar to filter queen other than it being a tub style.

As for it being wet/dry generally it was used as a dry system but there was a float valve made for them so they could be used to pick up water, this model used a peripheral bypass motor hence the vents on the front and top of the machine.

Now getting to the filters. There are bags made for them, you could also use them with a flat paper disc filter. And there was a cloth disc filter for motor protection too.

I THINK they used a 5.7" 2 stage peripheral bypass but I cannot remember for sure.

Industrial version

I've also seen some pictures of a "Fair-Fax Industrial" model with a metal base and no 3 pin power plug for the power nozzle. Curious if that metal base would fit on this machine, I personally think it looks way cooler!

I seen that same Fairfax on shopgoodwill but never looked beyond the first photo, so never knew it had a powerhead. Also I don't know much about Fairfax so I passed on it. I try not to get too "samey" with my collection, I like having variety and not too much of the same vac style.

It's in great shape! Very likely sold and marketed for light commercial use for small offices and entryways and such. Enjoy it!

I have the newer black "A Touch of Class" Fairfax. The suction unit is very very powerful, though the Wessel Werk PN leaves a bit to be desired. The Eureka PN on yours will be a great performer. I'm guessing it has a VGII? Mine has a Lamb dual stage full bypass motor, I"m guessing yours has a similar set up. It's designed to be able to be used with or without bags. There are two cloth filters, then you use a flat paper filter, kinda like a Silver King or a Watermatic. The muffler on the exhaust is suppose to have a sponge in it that you can put oil on to deodorize the air. Otherwise you can pull the muffler out and use it as a blower.

Actually the metal base machine without the power nozzle connection was just the first version that Fairfax put out. That is a larger base than normal though (which was an optional piece) The dolly that the machine rolls around on is removable. I have the slightly later version which still has the metal base but had the PN outlet added.

Incidentally the precursor to the Fairfax was the McAllister - Ross vacuum cleaner. (also pictured)

Nice model !

Does anyone know if I could match an Electrolux PN with this kind of machine without modification? There is a similar Fairfax for sale around here, the machine itself is in good condition, but the PN seems in poor shape and doesn't look good.

Not too sure about using an Electrolux PN but I took a few more pictures of the PN inlet to possibly help you match it up better, take note of that 3 pin connector!

If that doesn't work Fairfax still does sell all the power nozzles for all their models on their website.

(At least I think its all the models, still new at ownership with this thing lol)
