[USER=5706]@electroluxxxx[/USER] I found out why the brush holder was so close to the armature. It appears that someone had serviced this vacuum and used the wrong brush. The green brushes are a bit too big. Luckily I have a spare ClearTrak motor which was broken and installed the brushes from that motor to the CMS one. Brushes work perfectly and the issue with it being too close is now gone.
