Here's a 1959 RCA Victor AM radio I came across this week. When I found it, it looked like it was left inside a damp, roasting car abandoned in a farmer's field, foreclosed on back in the early 70s! It took a lot of cleaning; replacing its cap and transistors to get it to sound off once again...amazingly, it sounds pretty good with no filter hum.

This is a  5" Oscilloscope, model WO-88A, which I got just this Thursday. I would've posted it before, but my camera did a DYSON and DIED on me!!! I'll need to first replace a can, paper caps and the dreaded Micamolds, otherwise known as.....The MICA-BOMB!!!  Once it's recapped with the exact values, I'll be able to see where the garbage is hiding at!

Here's some more photos!

I just reopened it up again and tweaked out the oscillator as shown in the last photo, and I must say, it enhanced both the volume and reception considerably!

Very nice finds you have there!!! I too just bought a Zenith Royal 13 pocket transistor radio at an antique store about a week and a half ago. The battery terminals were corroded, so we cleaned that up and realized he had 2 wires from his super heterodyne disconnected from the board. My husband went ahead and re-soldered them back on the board, but he needs more tweaking, didn't have anymore time to mess with him yet. One day soon he will tell me things again! Ha Ha! Also, I love using the word "super heterodyne", my favorite word ever!!! BTW, next Halloween my husband and I are going to make me a Halloween costume so I can become the Super hero Super heterodyne! Ha Ha! Love the oscilloscope too! I have one that my husband gave me that's from either the 80's or 90's. The brand on him is Leader. He works great! We actually about 2 months ago took apart a GE transistor radio I bought at a garage sale for $2.00 and hooked him up to the oscilloscope so I could see his wave pattern thru the oscilloscope! Pretty neat! A few songs were cool to watch! I got a video on it, but I still have to figure out how to post videos on here! Good job to you and keep restoring history!!! :) -Michelle

Thanks so much, The Super Fantastic Heterodyne, controller of all electrical circuits. The manipulator of magnetic fields, the defier of gravity and the focuser of light! Your the newest member of the Justice League, your power is only equaled by that of Wonder Woman's most awesome strength! You should have no problem handling The Nefarious Super Sweeper and his evil Reel to Reel Monster, which vomits forth explosive caps and lightning bolts! These two confidantes are Lex Luthor's greatest allies from his Hall of Doom!  Go get'em girl....And many, many more Thinks Again!!! Calem

Filter hum-when you use the radio from batteries as above-no hum since the radio isn't running off the powerline.Battery radios are favored by DX'ers no hum or noise to mask weak radio signals the DX'er is looking for.Tried a test for myself-have an older DeWalt contractor site radio-it can run from the line or DeWalt tool battery-sure enough DX'ers are right you can hear better with the set running off a battery.
The Reel-To-Reel monsters I knew were freindly except the Horrible Dreaded,STUDER!!!Ampex and Scully RR machines only used a simple relay switch circuit to control the reel motors and capstan motor. Now for Studer---these have enought chips in them to launch a Saturn rocket to the Moon!!!
Another thing----for both radios and transmitters----TUNED CIRCUITS----without those NEITHER would work!!!!And where I work--if the circuits aren't tuned right---arcs&Sparks!!!-and sometimes a little smoke thrown in!Then its get out your tool kit-work to do!

Hey, why don't you write out what happened and what you did to fix it. Also, include some pictures of the board and capacitor that went bad. We will help you!!!! Information is the key to answering questions. We will try to help you with fixing it up yourself! Yea Reel to Reel player! Ha Ha! :) -Michelle

It looks like them transistors are upside down in your high voltage cage in (pic #2)...interesting! If you don't have audio, one could've died open on you. If one or more of your electrolytics in (pic #3) have died, you would at least have low audio or filter hum.

Cool, thanks for the pictures!!! My husband and I will look at your pictures and get back to you! To be continued...if we need more info or not! Thanks again! :) -Michelle
