Rare Turbopower 2?

Somewhere at the back of my garden shed is a Hoover TurboPower 2.
I don't know the exact model number off the top of my head... I'll hunt it out later.
However I've never seen one of this design before.... is it rare?

It looks a standard TP2 machine... grey in colour, bagged but with autosense and red furniture guard.

BUT....

The cable enters the machine at the REAR.
Not at the top by the handle like all the other TP 2/3 machines.
Cable enters on the back of the machine close to where the hose wraps around.

Also this machine has TWO on board crevice tools.
The standard TP 2/3 long thin one and also a short stubby one the same that would of been supplied with the TP1 machines.

Are the early TP 2 machines with rear cable entry and two crevice tools rare?

I bought it purely as a machine for spares.... I've taken a rear wheel from it and also the handle release mechanism.... Other than that it is complete and in full working order.

Not rare at all, just an early version of an original style which was updated around 1994 when the Turbopower 3 went into production.

Hi Matt,

As Benny said, not rare at all. These were the top end of the standard Turbopower 2 range from 1992 - 1997 when the second generation cleaners came out.

The cable entry was changed in 1994 and the small crevice tool was removed, but this didn't happen with the introduction of the TP3, as Benny indicated, as these didn't arrive until late 1995/early 96. The Turbopower 1000 was still on sale at the time of the changes.

Chris, I said the changes were made when the Turbopower 3 went into production, not introduction, and this is correct. "Production" would have been at any point prior to the machines being available in-store, which, as I know from the shops around me at that time, was the later part of 1995 for the Turbopower 3. I maybe did not make it as clear as I could have done, for which I apologise.

When the Turbopower 3 cleaner was designed, it was clear that the new, longer hose was going to foul the cable entry point if the design was left as it was. To that end, Hoover redesigned the bag housing unit so as to allow the cable to leave through the top of it. Once put into manufacture, the new bag housing was used with immediate effect for Turbopower 2 models once stock of the older housing had diminished. The Turbopower 1000 was already on borrowed time once the designs for the Turbopower 2 had been finalised, and presumably Hoover held enough stock of the original bag housing, or at the very least was able to make few enough from new, to last the discontinuation period.

As has been said already in the past, the idea of two crevice tools was a rather pointless exercise, so eventually a new storage unit was designed, this time without the section to house a small crevice tool. Again, the discontinuation of the Turbopower 1000 was a chance for Hoover to use-up excess generic parts such as the original tool holder and narrow hose, meaning that new Turbopower 2 models could roll off the line with the all-new modification.

Isn't the cable entry at the rear due to all the autosense gubbins being where the cable would normally go?

No, not at all. When these cleaners were first designed they all had the mains lead exiting on the rear. When the designing the Turbopower 3, it was necessary to raise the height of the hose for storage purposes, and in doing so would have caught the mains lead if the positioning of it had not been altered.

The Autosense is essentially variable power, but instead of being controled by the user, it is controled by a tiny microphone inside the cleaner, which increases the motor speed when it can hear grit being picked up. So the autosense feature wouldn't really have any impact on the point of entry of the cable as the majority of the autosense feature is located further down the machine.

Yes! Exactly the same as that Dysondestijl lol apart from the one I have has the peelable advert thing on the front still... you know where they advertise how much better than the TP1 it is.

I've never seen an early one before so thought it could of been rare!

As you can see the Turbopower 2 has the early cord placement on the left and the re located Turbopower 3 cord entry on the right

And if the cord entry had not changed for the introduction of the Turbopower 3, then this would be the issue created by it.

The below picture shows a lot on EBay currently which contains a very rare Turbopower 2 = one with the piston bag door bag full indicator. These were not around very long at all before being replaced with the bag full light, as seen on the other turbopower

Is a rare Turbopower 2 and I am extremely surprised that the bag door has not split, those piston bag doors were even more problematic for splitting!

Notice as well that they both have their Hoover roundels on the handles - now how many TP2's do you know that still have them on?
They aint that far from me either, but £50 is a bit steep as I don't know whether they work, and the other vacs in the lot are not worth bothering with. I'd only want the 2 turbopowers, and to get one with a piston bag door indicator would be a very good one as they are so rare.

A bag door the size of that on the Turbopower cleaners was asking for bother by having a great hole in the middle of it, of all places, for a piston bag-full indicator. It was neither use nor ornament, as it could not be seen by the user when the cleaner was in upright mode. The narrow bore hose meant that a lot of pressure built up behind that door, more so of course if the hose was blocked. And they so often did. The result was the door being sucked right in and splitting.

I remember saying that I wouldn't walk over hot coals for a Turbopower 2, I think if it was infront of me now with hot coals before it I would DEFFINATELY make an exception!!!!
