So I need a little help. I found a kirby G5 at a thrift store for $32. I am a rainbow junkie and this is my first kirby experience. The only thing I see wrong with it is that the tech drive is noisy. I ordered a new belt, brushroll, belt lifter sticker, and belts. I've also been using mothers to polish, but am not having as much luck as I see people having on here. My question is, is there a reputable, affordable place in the pittsburgh area that services or could look at the tech drive on a kirby? I emailed kirby and they wanted my zip so they could find a distributor close to me, but I wanted to ask on here first!

Kirby Tech Drive...

Is the Tech Drive working normally except for the noise? The noisy Tech Drive usually means that the clutches are worn out. This happens to all G series Kirbys eventually with age. If you take your G5 to a vac shop, they will most likely try to sell you a new Tech Drive assy. plus the labor to install it. You can order a new Tech Drive online for about $95.00 and install it yourself. You will save a lot of money. Check out the link below to see a you tube video on how to replace the Tech Drive yourself.

The address given above on Saw Mill Run Blvd has been my Kirby dealer for years. The shop is on Rt. 51 just below Brownsville Rd., to the left. Stay in the left lane as you cross 51 and don't go too fast or you'll miss it. The original owner, Gino Carrieri, was my friend and Kirby rep. He suffered an unfortunate illness a couple of years ago and passed away--a sad loss for many of us. The current owner is his wife, Beth.

Not knowing exactly what kind of noise your G5 transmission is making, the G5 and G6 transmissions at the time made an audible type of swishing sound as it moved back and forth. This was normal for those transmissions. The Ultimate G and later transmissions moved smoother and quieter. Give Beth a call at 412-882-5900, tell her what's going on, and proceed from there. Good luck with your G5. I have a restored one in my collection, and I love the color.

Thanks!!!

Thanks everyone! I have watched videos of it on YouTube, and I am thinking this is its normal sound. I really appreciate all of the support! If anyone has Rainbow questions, I would be happy to help!!!
