About two years ago, I got a Rainbow Chrome Dome model D for pretty cheap. I attempted to oil the motor, but I learned my lesson NOT to work on Rainbows. After two years, I dug (literally dug) it out of the closet in efforts of putting it back together. And just like back then, I'm completely lost. Show me a Kirby or Hoover and I can take it apart to every last screw and doohickey, but show me a Rainbow, and all I know how to do is put water in it and clean the separator. Photo No. 3 is from when I first took it apart.

People always take the wrong screws out of a Rainbow. First, put the motor support ring back in. Leave the two screws that secure the switch over OUT until the very end.

Your very first thing in order to take apart the motor is to remove the carbon brushes. Then, remove the FAN nut (not the separator spider wheel nut), and remove the fan stage clips. Remove the entire fan assembly and spacers. Remove the bearing plate (four screws). Remove the carbon brush holders next. Then remove the spider wheel nut, pull out the armature, and remove the screws that hold the bearing shield, slinger ring, and lower bearing.

Reassemble by reversing the above.
Last thing - replace the switch cover.
Be sure the exhaust port is positioned above the switch, and not to the front.
