I would keep your current vacuum cleaners as well. While central vacuums can be quite convienent at times, they typically don't pull the carpet nap up as well as say your Kirby would. Typically central vacuums aren't meant to be a heavy duty cleaner like a Kirby would be. I have never noticed a loss of suction as you get farther away from the outlet, but be careful not to let the pipes get clogged. I think it's best to have a nice variety of vacuums to choose from.
