Does anyone have this machine? Is it an Automatic E? Was it really THAT color blue? It looks less turquoise than the ones I have seen. Although, it is a very nice color. Tim

Is the 1956 Electrolux E-Automatic. You have to remember, this is a scan of a color xerox of a printed four-color-process magazine print of a photo that you are viewing on a 72dpi color monitor! Color calibration is a precise art even with today's computerized technology; in the 1950s it was even more dicey. The original ad is not QUITE that intense in color but it's close.

The actual machine is not turquoise but hammertone blue, which was a metallic, grayish-bluish color. The hammertone finish is sprayed on and then the object painted is baked in the oven. The metallic flakes in the color diffuse and spread out during the baking process giving that beautiful "mottled" effect. This is why spray-painted hammertone from a paint can does not give the same effect.

I do have a copy of a glossy 11x17 color flyer of the same ad which was mailed out to customers or delivered to them by Electrolux salesmen canvassing the neighborhood. The flyer is too large to scan. The colors in it are truer to the original color of the machine since it was produced by a higher-quality printing process.

An interesting note, this was the first Electrolux model to have a vinyl woven hose (instead of cloth) and the color of it always seemed a little "off" somehow. The gray portion of the weaving tended to come off looking sort of greenish instead of gray, and the blue portion was, originally, a dark 'turqoisey' blue. I assume Electrolux had tried to match the same colors in the similarly patterened cloth hose of the E, LXI and LX but didn't quite hit the mark with the new material.

I remember seeing many, MANY E-Automatics as a kid when they would have still been fairly new, and the hoses all had the same kind of "off" color about them.
