Usually the FQ motor filter is replaced each time you go thru a pack of filter cones-a motor filter is enclosed with each package of filter cones.If you repalce the filter each time you go thru a pack of cones you should have no problems with the motor.Yes,if the machine was run without the cone-the little motor filter has to be replaced.I had to do that with the machine I bought from the yard sale-and used the filter that was in the pack of cones that came with the vacuum.
