Did they sell Eurekas in the UK? For some odd reason unknown canister vacs were always bigger sellers in Canada than uprights ever were as opposed to the US which was the reverse supposedly. Hoover was undoubtedly #1 but it's hard to say if Eureka or Kenmore was #2. I'd even go as far as saying Kenmore displaced Hoover at some point as the top selling brand in Canada. Eureka was often sold as a rebadged dept store brand, either as Eatons (Viking) or the Hudson Bay Co. (Baycrest, Beaumark) can't remember which. I think it was Eatons, The Bay rebadged Hoovers me thinks.
