I got chance to Hoover the dining room with my 900 yesterday since dad, who usually sits there for most of the day, had gone out with my mum and sister, plus the dogs had been confined to the kitchen. There was time to clean up the dog hairs off the floor, in order to take some decent pictures!

Would have taken more but then the switch suddenly fell to bits on one of my new aquisitions, so had to fix that!

Anyone know the make of this machine?

Here's the machine that the switch came off.

Shortly after this picture was taken, the switch jammed and wouldn't operate. When I stripped it down, the two insulators, which pass through the spring had broken, causing the spring and other parts to fall out..

hmmm, where to find a suitable bit of plastic?

Thought to start with that this plant label would be suitable..

WRONG! The plastic turned out to be too brittle, so in the end I used some blue plastic off a Nat West Bank Ring Binder!

Well, it was the right thickness and a lot more flexible than the plant label...but this picture showing the label gives you the general idea. I drew around the damaged insulator onto the new plastic, using the original insulator as a template, then adding on a bit by guesswork!

Good Runner!

The motor runs surprisingly well for such an old machine, bearing in mind that the commutator looked a bit dirty and that the brushes had been turned round by 90 degrees, one of them a little burned on one of the faces..

I turned the brushes round before I started it up.

The only other thing I had to do was to flick the switch a few times and clean up the prongs protruding from the motor casing, where a previous owner has fitted a Black and Decker connector to get the thing going! This obviously isn't the right one and the prongs are smaller than the sockets but the side of the sockets bear on the prongs when connected. However, on one occasion when it refused to start, it appeared to be making a bad connection here.

Frayed cable?

The frayed cable was my doing, since I was in a rush to get the Black and decker connector back together after doing a few continuity checks and jammed part of the cloth covering, tearing it a little. I'll sort that out later.

Here's another close-up picture with the machine running. I was trying to show the sparking and there is a small amount, which is normal but here I can't see anything in the picture!

and as for the corridors, there's no escape route...

The 575 with the chassis painted grey at the back is an American version and came from Marty Kaplan.

I can also spot a Vacuette, Eureka and an unusual British stick cleaner, called an Excelsior.

Yet another corridor cluttered up!

Here's a 652 I could probably do with selling, along with an Electrolux 502S and a Hoover Ranger U4014. There's also another (I've got about 4) Hoover 425, which I've got going; it runs well but wants a bit of TLC.

View with the other machine running, sorry no 110 volt two-w

I got the special running by re-wiring it and also replaced the carbons, one of which was worn down to about 1mm or less!..so that was going to go any time.

One of the wheels was worn flat, due to it being seized on its shaft - will folk ever learn to oil them? The front wheel shafts had been replaced with bolts, which weren't big enough, so I found some better ones and got rid of most of the wobble.

I made up a crude temporary bottom plate, since that was missing; I'll probably have to look into getting some of them made eventually.

At some stage I hope to get round to repainting the chassis but don't want to overdo it.

Premier Duplex

I was pleased to recently find this Premier Duplex cleaner to complement my Premier Junior.

This appears to be a slightly later model than the Junior, since the wheels are not in line with the nozzle but behind it. Also, the bag looks like it's for a later model Premier, though it certainly looks the part and has the same fitting.
