WOW! Really great HOOVER AD...LOVED IT! This is definitely one I have not seen before and thoroughly enjoyed! Thanks for all the efforts and contributions that led to this and other fun, new material. Hoover Rocks! (and plastic vacuums shake!)

You know, each time someone posts a thread about the POD....

It makes everyone look at it twice cause they, (read ME) can't remember what it was when they, (read ME) looked at it the first time. At 5:36 AM.

All it does it makes the POD wear out that much faster. Every time you open it - it fades a little from the light getting to it.

I also loved today's pic of the day, mostly because it features one of my favorite "coffee can" Hoovers, the 475. I am lucky to have one in my collection, which was a gift from Tom Anderson about 4 years ago, along with an original hose and suction connector. I eventually was able to find cleaning tools for it, but the crevice tool is black bakelite (instead of metal as it shows in the ad) and the floor brush is a brown one from a later model. Only need the blower connector, tool caddy (or box?) and instruction book to make it complete.
And not only is it one of my favorite "coffee can" Hoovers, it was also my first, to be joined later by a 300, 541, 700 Special, and a 425.

It's one of my favorites, too. A nice mid-line machine that was every bit as good as the 800 series. I LOVE the ad series they did for these, too. I had NEVER seen this particular ad until today!

Jeff and John, both of your 475s are simply gorgeous! Good to know that there are some 'out there' that are in such nice condition. John, yours simply sparkles.. and I spy an original cord? and plug? What's the story with your cleaner?

John, I see in your photo that your (former) 475 has the same "drooping bumper" issue that mine does. I don't recall seeing this issue on any other Hoovers. Makes me wonder if they used a different type of rubber for this model.

Fred - I cannot remember now where I got my 475. I think it was somewhere in Portland, but, well, I just can't remember.

Charles - Yeah, weird about that droopy bumper. Mine's always been like that. I wonder if it was a defect?

Anybody else have a 475 with a droopy front bumper??

I just took a closer look at Jeff's 475, the first one shown in this thread. Interestingly, his bumper has three rivets across the front, with one right in the center.

John, with yours and mine, there are only two rivets, one near each corner. I wonder if ours were earlier models and that the "drooping bumper" defect was noted and fixed in later models, or if someone added that third rivet to Jeff's. (Jeff, do you know?)

Seeing this thread makes me want to get my 475 out and use it. I just may take it down to the church with me this week!

Bumpers And Bags

Charles, I really don't know if the center rivet was factory or added, but I think your theory is a good one that Hoover may have noticed the droop and corrected it during the run. I also noticed that the bags on yours and mine are identical, but John's is slightly different--ours both say "it beats as it sweeps as it cleans" and his doesn't, and the typeface used for "The Hoover" is Gothic on ours but an oldstyle face like Caslon or Goudy on his.
Either way, all three of them were either made in 1935 or 1936. The serial # on mine is 4851141 if either or both of you want to compare numbers to see which is older or newer. Who knows, depending on how close the numbers are, they could have been made the same year, month, week, or maybe even the same day! Would be interesting to find out, wouldn't it!

Jeff - I'm pretty sure that mine is the original bag. Here's the ad that was featured the other day, showing the bag that mine has. The bags that you two have look like they were from the 150 era (1936-ish), because that was when they switched to that great Art Deco lettered look. I wonder if Hoover did a newer run of those bags as the 475 moved on in the production line? Unfortunately, I cannot look at my serial number, because my 475 is in storage.....

My 475 is in storage but, I think, accessible. When I can get over there I'll note the serial number.

n.b. I have a couple of "new old stock" Hoover cloth bags and among them is the same one on John's 425. I'd change it out, except that this is one of the Hoovers that Stan Kann gave me, and that's the bag that was on it.

He was pretty meticulous about original bags so I have a feeling this was the original bag for it. Maybe there were two different 425 bags, or maybe since this was a "lesser" model to Stan, he didn't care as much about it having an original bag. Too bad he's not still here to ask....... (He would have turned 87 this past December 9th btw.)
