A hummingbird has taken up residence under the umbrella on our balcony, presumably to get out of the hot sun. It hangs out there pretty much all the time except when it's feeding or chasing away other hummingbird intruders.

There are two that have been here for a long time, several years I guess -- as soon as I put out a feeder they appeared. They seem to be rivals and the one that won out is the one who's staying on the balcony. It's relatively fearless; I can come out onto the balcony and stand there and it won't fly away unless I make a sudden move or get too close.

One day when I put out a refilled feeder it came swooping over from a tree across the front yard. It came right up to my nose, no more than a few inches away, just hovering there and looking at me. Then it darted over to the feeder, drank, and then darted away. They really are captivating little creatures, aren't they.

Oh, a funny thing -- the hummingbird perches on the top of a set of wind chimes. The wind catcher of the wind chimes is ... a hummingbird!

How cute! I don't see much hummingbirds down here in Florida, but plenty of bumble-bees in spring! we have a vine that has taken over the fence in the backyard. it blooms these pretty white flowers that the bees love! My yard would be a hummingbird paradise!

I've learned how to talk to it -- I make a "tich-tich-tich" sound with the tip of my tongue against the back side of my teeth that somewhat mimics its high-pitched chatter. Sometimes when it's in the tree across the yard, it will zoom over when I "tich-tich-tich."

Also, a melodious, falsetto "Hello, sweet little bird" gets its attention and it will look at me quizzically.

Have hummingbirds where I am-they like a pine tree that is in my backyard-just outside my kitchen window. When the bird flies past the window think its a large moth at first-but wait a minute-moths can't fly that fast and hover! When I am in the backyard don't see them-but when I am inside-esp in the kitchen can see and watch them. These are sort of metallic greenish color.Neat little creatures!Sometimes he hovers outside the window and appears to be watching ME!
