Truth be told, I don't think the company nor an aftermarket supplier will put in the effort anymore. I really couldn't say I feel Oreck is now a brand to be sought. 20 years ago, yes, but many other companies like Riccar have "built a better mousetrap" and built a more heavy duty 8 pound upright. For all we know, TTI may in time drop Oreck (like they did with Royal).
I can tell you Oreck had a run of defective fan housings in late 2001/early 2002. Most if not all have been replaced by this point.

Call me crazy, but I think a metal fan case may sound good, but I think it could be worse. With everything else being plastic (including the upright locking tab) it would be be a mess. That would break instantly with a small amount of force. When turning the cleaner it could also pop/crack the internal molded plastic tray that the neck slides into.
I don’t know, just me, but I think its a bad idea.

@oreck_xl is spot on about the fan cases of the early 2000s. My Oreck from 2003 had a defective fan case that I had to replace after about 3 years. So maybe mine had an old 2002 case lol.
And to be honest, I've repaired and resold a ton of Orecks from the 90s and late 2000s and none have had a cracked fan case. I think the issue has been pretty much resolved.

All my Oreck XL's are Goodwill fodder that I bought used and abused and none have cracked fans. One had a pack of bags in it from 2019 copyright so it was used very recently. I think like others have said you just had bad luck and plucked out pre-recalled models that coincidentally all have the bad fan casings. Little old ladies maybe that have had them sitting in the closet for years? The newer made parts have likely all been resolved from the plastic issue.
The people that buy Orecks anymore I highly doubt care about it enough to fix it and improve the design. If it quits working they pitch it in the bin.
I found a HSN exclusive Oreck Axis in a dumpster a couple years back and all it needed was a new baseplate (fell down the stairs perhaps?). It was a $20 part.
Now an Oreck with a metal baseplate and internal parts, that might be something to behold. It would be heavier but it would sink into the carpet more for a deep clean.
