There used to be a store close to where I live called National Wholesale Liquidators, and their circulars always came in the mail. They had a large array of vacuums, even sold some NIB that had been discontinued for quite sometime, liek the Dirt Devil MVP and the Hoover Softguard. I was wondering if anyone has kept a collection of their circulars, because we threw them out not too long after we got them. This was like back in 2001 or 2002. I'd love to see them again!!!!! I found ONE on the wayback archive.

Nice! I just recently started saving vacuum ads from the newspaper - I cut them out and then write the store and date on the back. I didn't know other people thought the same!

Cool to see people saving circulars! The ones from NWL in the early 2000s were the best, I regret not keeping them.
 
I hope someone here can find them for you - I've seen posts from a lot of people that have saved vacuum paperwork and magazine ads - hopefully someone has them.

In the mid 80s I was helping a friend clean her house and in the basement was 2 stacks of newspapers 3' tall her mother wanted to turn in for recycling or something for her church. 


 


Back then the Sunday paper was the one with ALL the fliers and adverts in it. It was the main way of advertising then.  We used to live to receive that thick Sunday paper and excitedly sort through it.  Not just fliers but also classifieds.  No Craigslist back then.  Some people would subscribe just for the Sunday paper. 


 


I wanted to get those old newspapers because I knew they'd be full of old ads from Sears and stores advertising Hoover canisters.   lol.   .... but she wouldn't let me take the papers.  ..... I got them another time, at least the Sears ads.

When I was a young boy, still in the “vacuum cleaner closet”, I used to go into the trash to retrieve whatever newspapers and magazines were being thrown out in order to cut out advertisements for vacuums. Since my father was an advertising producer for a Canadian electronics importer, he also used to get “Home Furnishings Daily” which always had a lot of trade ads from Eureka and Hoover and other vac-makers. I used to go gaga over HFD’s special editions for the bi-annual Housewares Show at Chicago’s McKormick Place!

I would collect all the ad clippings in a large envelope and hid them at the bottom of my night-table drawer - like a stash of porn!!!!! 🤣

See, I did that too but I had no shame about the appliances and furnishings I cut out.  I think I even made a couple of collages at some point. 


 


I wish I had ALL-L the literature I collected in my life.  From model homes and subdivisions, to mobile homes, car brochures, camping trailers, appliance literature, furniture literature, magazines.  


 


Oh- I'd feel like I won the lottery.

You will not believe this, but the stash “disappeared” one day from my night-table! I am sure my mother threw out the collection without even asking me. And because there was no discussion afterward, it re-enforced the idea that this was something to be ashamed about. It must have been one of those weekly “cleaning lady days” and they needed to move furniture to clean or something. Pretty sad, huh? Our family was full of “undiscussed secrets.”

When I became a teenager and inherited a lockable file cabinet, I finally had a way to protect the new collection I had to rebuild from scratch. But boy did I lose a lot of valuable vacuum advertising when she threw away that first collection...☹️
 
I know that feeling

I lost stuff that same way, usually highly valued toys or experiments. In elementary school it was usually a process of coming home from school to see what busy body thoughtlessly gave or threw away..... destroying bonds of trust one incident at a time. ..... she would later come to regret.

Not having appropriate boundaries was a big problem in our family.

I'm sure we all have our issues with parents/caregivers.
