New vacuum for needy family for Christmas

Hi everyone,

A friend of mine is working with his club to help out needy families in our area this Christmas. One of the things I overheard him talking about was a family needing a vacuum. I told him if they needed help, I could help with the vacuum. He said he would check and get back to me. I decided I didn't want to wait until the last minute, so I bought a brand new Hoover Tempo bagged upright. If he calls, even at the last minute, I'm ready. If not, then I have my first brand new vacuum. Did I make a good choice with the Tempo, or could I have done better? What do you think?

Joe - I am a big "fan" of the Hoover Tempo! I bought one myself and could not be happier!

But it is only good for carpets - it is really not good for anything else. The hose is far too short for tool use, and the brush roll can not be turned off so in tool mode I find it dangerous.

But for the low price (in Canada at Home Depot it costs only CAD130), it is an excellent upright carpet cleaner. Excellent deep carpet cleaning, excellent filtration, not too noisy and actually quite easy to use since it is relatively lightweight, and has extra handholds to grab it with your second hand if need be. If you can find the older version that has the headlight (I think the newer version does not), then you are in luck. This Tempo is highly rated by Consumer Reports. I was leery about the little flash of light that sparked up from the cheap on/off switch at first, but I think it was just residual dust from the factory that was burning up - because after a few weeks of use, the sparking stopped.

Again: excellent for carpets - not to be used for anything else though. But because it is so low-priced, you have enough cash leftover to by a nice low-priced Miele Olympus for everything else and you have a great cleaning team!!!

BTW - that vac is a great gift for that needy family if they have carpeting......

Agreed. We sell a lot and they are good vacs. The only thing lousy about them is the switch. They burn up frequently (that's not dust- it's a poorly engineered switch), and they can also get stuck.

I still haven't heard from my friend about the family. Everytime I ask, he says he'll check and get back to me. He never does. Oh well, I tried. His club probably bought a $39 Dirt Devil and called it good. (God, I hope not!)
