Following on from an earlier thread about new vacs at Argos, I was looking at the Argos iPad app and see that they have listed a lot of new cleaners, mainly from Vax and Hoover.

Unfortunately when clicking on the new items, it is unable to show further details at the moment and when searching Argos on the desktop website, the new models don't show up.

From what has been listed so far, most if the new cleaners are the same as the current high wattage machines, but with lower wattage motors fitted. The Purepower is still there in the same red and white colour scheme along with the bagless Dustmanager variant. The only new Hoover cleaner I can see is a bagged mains powered stick cleaner. There is a Telios based cleaner marked A A A, which I assume means it has A carpet pick up, A floor pick up and A energy rating, but I could be wrong.

There is a range of Vax cleaners called Impact, but they seem to be based on existing models.
I noticed what seemed like a new Vax Dual Power carpet washer, but the picture only showed the inderside of the machine. It could be the larger version that is marketed by Hoover in the USA.

In time the website and app will be updated with the full range of new models from all manufacturers, but judging by the new batch from Hoover and Vax, there's nothing to get very excited about.
I still think that this new EC law is a good thing and in time will hopefully bring some new innovations to the market, especially when the maximum wattage reduces to 900W in 2017.

Hey Roger,

Thanks for highlighting the change. Looks like Hoover has taken the easy way out and just changes the motors with no new models.

And that corded stick looks like it could be from the DIVA range in Europe by that thumbnail picture. I have one already I got from Germany, nice machine.

Cheers
Mark

I guess the energy rating will only be displayed for new models or models that are under 1600 watts at the moment. Come September the rating will have to be displayed for all the types of cleaner under the new legislation. The Miele S7 uprights have an 1800 watt motor, so they will need to have a lower wattage motor fitted to new models.

I'm wondering if the eco Purepower will have an improved brushroll to compensate for the lower wattage, but the cleaner is probably the same as the high wattage version. In the past manufacturers would offer high wattage cleaners and the customer in many cases would choose one model over the other because it had a higher wattage motor. So an uninformed consumer would say pick a 2100 watt upright over a 1600 watt model, even though in reality, the 1600 watt model may perform better. Now that pick up ratings will be displayed, I think manufacturers are going to highlight that, rather than the wattage. So now a customer may choose a vac because it has a triple A rating over a vac that scores a B rating or less. Personally I would want the best performing machine, so I would look for A rated cleaners over ones with a more mediocre score.

I will check the Argos and other websites daily to see of any new models appearing. I look at Very and Grattan a lot because they still offer twice yearly printed catalogues like Argos and they need to have info on new models earlier so can get them published. I seem to remember that printed Grattan and Freemans catalogues used to be sent out to customers in late June, so changes to their websites must be iminent.

All in all I am excited about this new law and looking forward to seeing some new innovations in the marketplace, even though for now, some manufacturers will just be modifying current models.

I can only see the new vacs on the Argos App on my iPad, so a link will not work. I can't even copy the pictures either. If you have any sort of mobile device that you can download the Argos app into, then I suggest you try that. Failing that, just keep checking the Argos website as it will be updated in due course.

If you click the home button a the Off button at the same time it takes a picture.Just a suggestion

Just curious what this legislation you mention is and it's purpose. In the US there has long been a maximum amperage for household appliances of 12 amps. This is a safety margin for 15 amp circuits, which are pretty much the norm here for residential use. With our 120VAC house current that works out to 1440 WATTS.

DesertTortoise: In the EU they have passed a law that limits the max wattage of vacuum cleaners to 1200 watts in September 2014 and then down to 900 watts in September 2017. This is intended as a measure to help reduce greenhouse gasses.

In the US we have been limited to 1440 watts for several years now. This is a safety measure to prevent the possibility of overloading our 15 amp (1800 watt) household circuits.

When will there be a new video

Well dys0nb0y, new videos will be uploaded to my channel very soon. Apart from the three cleaners pictured, I will be unboxing and reviewing a new carpet washer and upright vacuum cleaner. In the future I will be uploading videos for a Miele Revolution, Miele stick vac, Numatic Hetty, Sebo Duo,Bissell Spotbot, Miele S4, Miele Hybrid, Sebo Professional G, Hoover Alpina and more.
I have to work to buy these vacuums, so I will upload videos when I have the time.

In Blighty....

Our 13 Amp plug and socket system allows a load of up to 3120 watts to be pulled by an appliance (assuming 240v). Technically speaking we are on 230v (+10%/-6% tollerance fudge factor) because of harmonisation legislation rubbish from Europe, but as most substations are old, you can expect 240v on the line and anything upto 253v!

A Canadian friend of mine moved to London a couple of years ago and was amazed at how quick electric kettles boil over here (as most are 3kW).

One negative thing about our plugs - the risk of treading on one barefoot. The prongs tend to point up when left on the floor and it does hurt.
