Hi there. Just got this Hoover still in its orignal box with all the packaging and tools!
What can it be?

Isn't it amazing that people will keep the original packaging for all these years. I always think, "How fast can I get rid of this box?" Very nice find!

I agree Eurekastar

I've thrown out all my packaging ASAP for years, but lately for VAC purchases, I have held on to a few boxes that weren't ridiculous to store, for our future collectors to enjoy. My grandmother had all the boxes from her 1950's Hoovers that were almost as appealing to me, as a collector, as the machine, itself.

The bigger question is will the next generation have any interest in our current vacs at all, let alone the packaging it came in ??

Question about the hose

Does anybody know whether this white hose is original to this model. Would I be right to think that the hose was blue originally?

White hose

It is surprising that another has turned up in original box - as I have one too. I think the white hose is a replacement although melded on the the original fittings.

I believe that the shortlived second version of the 417 (417C) may have had a braided hose, but that on the 417E as shown above would have been blue - in fact it appears that the C and E versions existed side by side in 1957. The 417E carried on until 1962 or so, when replaced with the 417G, which was the last version of this model but with colour revisions over the years.

The 417G did have the white hose and returned to pip & clip tool attachement although it used the smaller combination carpet/floor nozzle used on the Hooverette

417G in its first incarnation shown below

The hose

Nice photos guys!
I cant decide whether the white hose is original. The rubber hose ends do not have the Hoover logo on them and are not the same as the Hoover 638 cleaning tools hose ends which dates from the same time. However the instruction leaflet which I also got in the box (and it is just a piece of paper!) mentions the double stretch hose and has an illustration of the hose in use with the rubber ends looking more like the 638 hose ends. I will look up the month of manufacture (I can look up the serial number) and post it next - it might help to work it out.
Best wishes, Jonathan

My 417E

My 417E Serial number is 186123 making it around March/April 1958.
Interesting - the manual indicates that it should still be maroon at this date! So an early 417E in blue with the old style toolset. Another thing that doesn't seem quite right - the flex and rubber grommit that holds it as it enters the cleaner are both maroon. A throw back to the old colours?
