My Frist Electrolux Canister

Today I went to some thrift stores and found an Electrolux XXX. It came with a cord reel and a newer hose, but no attachments. I say thats alright for $21.

I must say this a neat find, BUT it has the poorest suction I've ever seen! I've tried it without the hose, bag and post-motor filter and it makes no difference. I don't seen how such poor suction could ever clean any carpet. Is there something I should be looking for that could effect this?

Very quiet and beautiful. Any other info I should know?

If the motor runs well and quietly and the suction is weak then I would first suspect an accumulation of dust wads ingested into the fans, clogging & blocking the turbine vanes.

Another possibility is a dried out motor chamber gasket with a crack or void admitting air to pass from bag chamber to motor chamber without passing through the fans.

Fairly easy to remove the motor unit, slip or pry off the fan cans and inspect the turbines. Tweezers and a thick pipe cleaners are excellent tools for cleaning the vanes. Note the fans are precisely balanced so take care not to deform them or file off any metal. No matter how tempting, do NOT use a metal screwdriver to scrape off the dirt! Use something of wood like a toothpick.
Fan #1 must first be removed from the spindle to get the can shroud for #2 off.

Another possibility: If the rubber gasket around the metal rim of the cloth dust bag is hardened or cracked -- or, worse, missing -- that will detrimentally affect the suction power.

Below where the cord plugs into the machine are two knobs, one on either side. Loosen those knobs and take the back end of the machine off. There should be a filter inside the rear end. That filter might need to be cleaned or replaced. I don't know if there is a replacement filter being made, I will defer to the Electrolux collectors.

I've been able the cord reel off but there is another metal plate that I can't get off. Even if I did that I still see no way to pull the motor out.

Hi, Nathaniel, I can help. Loosen those little nuts, loosen them till they are almost near the front of the threads. There are long arms that clip into little slots on the sides of the inside of the vacuum's casing. After loosening the nuts you will be able to push down and slide the arms out of the way and then pry up the motor cover. To remove the motor for service loosen the 3 nuts on the motor. Pull your 2 wires out of the switch, as they just slide in. You can then remove your motor for service.
