Mom's Aerus quit

Hi all.
I'm hoping someone can offer some insight as to what may have happened to Mom's Aerus Lux Legacy.
I know it's not easy without seeing it. On top of that, I know nothing about the inner workings, and I'm not even where the vacuum is. This is the story that was texted to me.
My sister was using it the other day. It was working fine, and turned off because the bag was full. This time, however, after they replaced the bag, the vacuum still wouldn't run. The light comes on, indicating that it's plugged in. But, when they click the switch, it doesn't start.
You now know as much as I do.
Based on that limited information; does anyone have any suggestions for what I should check when I get over there? I'm not prepared to crack open the body to check stuff inside. I'm just wondering (and hoping) that maybe it could be something simple.

I've been informed that there was also a possible burning smell when it shut off.
I asked if it smelled like rubber burning, or different, but they didn't know.[this post was last edited: 5/3/2021-15:34]

My first guess would be overheat or stall sensor tripped. Next thing I would check is maybe the carbon brushes wore down and lost their tolerance and now the motor won't turn. Absolute worst case would be the armature shorted out but in that case the mains on switch would not be lighting up - unless the indicator light bypasses the motor.

On the off chance that the problem is not with the vacuum, check the circuit breaker and/or check for a GFCI outlet that has triggered. Test it on an outlet that you know is working. Good luck.

Most likely the control valve for the bag. See YouTube in link below. It will most likely need replacing. I’ve replaced several on my own it’s not hard plus you have a YouTube video to show you how to do it. The plastic gets brittle and the seal falls off at the end of the stem letting air in. The valve thinks the bag is full and shuts off.

You could also bypass the whole thing by removing the tube to the main switch.


I reread your post. Does it run? Then immediately shut off? If so it’s the bag valve. Another common problem on these is the plastic rocker switch that controls the power switch. Also a cheap part to replace .

May have dodged a bullet

Hey guys.
Thank you all for the responses.
I just got over to Mom's this evening. I was SO hoping that it would just be some stupid little thing.
I opened the bag compartment, hoping that the bag was in wrong, and not contacting the little button.
I wasn't able to confirm that, because the bag came out when I opened the door. It was stuck on the tube on the inside of the door.
I pulled the bag off of there, and installed it correctly. I brought the vacuum over to an outlet, and plugged it in. It immediately started running.
No problem with starting then shutting off right away. It just seems fine.
So, I'm guessing that somehow, they didn't have the bag inserted correctly. Thank God.

Oh cool. Odd they would smell a burning odor from just a loose bag.

Are they genuine Aerus bags? The bojack bag's cardboard collar can bend when installed, losing contact with the bag lock out switch.

They do use only genuine Aerus bags.
As for the burning smell, I believe they claimed to smell that when it initially shut down from the full bag. I have my doubts.
I'm not confident that the folks currently using the vacuum are the most careful with it. I have a feeling it probably gets a little rough handling from time to time. When my mom and I were the only ones using it, there was never a problem, and it was babied. But I don't live there any more, and Mom is legally blind and almost 90 years old. So, my sister and her boyfriend are the ones using it lately.
It's still a quite low mileage machine, so I would be very surprised if it had a major problem.
It remains to be seen what happens the next time they use it, but I feel pretty confident that it was just a cattywompus bag installation.

If your mom's vacuum quit maybe she was super hard on it. Just go buy another one to use.
