I recently went to my local Electrolux dealer and they invited me into the back room. There were so many vintage Luxes!! He happened to be working on a Model G cord winder. He told me these springs were like death traps. He also told me he worked with a guy who was lacerated sixteen times on the arm by a Model G spring. He had to go to the hospital!! Cautiousness can't hurt too much, can it?

Honestly springs can be quite dangerous if one doesn't pay too much attention. The springs in cordwinders are razor sharp and under pressure and when not carefully opened they tend to go shall we say nuts! [this post was last edited: 2/5/2017-00:25]

I don't know about that....once you do a G recoil assembly properly, all the models after that seem easy. I've had a few of them cut loose without any physical harm, although it is dramatic. Just about anything can hurt you that has built in torque such as a wound spring. I used to repair clocks and some of the bigger wind-up wall clocks can be tricky without having 'bands' to contain the springs. Better clocks have 'barrels' that the springs fit inside.

The guy that was lacerated sixteen times by a G spring was obviously a slow learner or probably not suited for appliance repair. Anyone afraid of the G recoil assembly, send it to me and I'll give it a good home.
