Model 980 Electro Hygiene

Here is a picture of my latest addition to the family. Model 980 Electro Hygiene with removable head. Not sure how rare this machine is but have never seen one before. I also have her sister the Model 903. Here she is pictured with her cousin a Royal 880.

Here is another picture of the Electro Hygiene with the head removed. She is styling with her cousin Miss Royal 880. Just love the older Royals and Electro Hygienes...hence my screen name Royal 880. I have been viewing this website for years and finally decided to post a few of my vacuums.

I noticed from a thread several years ago that you had an owners manual for the Model 980 that you were going to copy and send to Greg. Could I get a copy of the owners manual sent to me. I have a copy of the Model 903 but not the Model 980.

And you're right, the 980 is a rare machine, haven't seen very many of them. The Royal version, model 888, and the Galaxie Prestige 990 (made by Royal and sold through Electro-Hygiene dealerships) is just as rare. Do you have the attachments for it? It would take the same attachments as the 903, only the suction coupler would be different. There was also an optional polisher nozzle available.
I love the older Royals and Electro-Hygienes too, and have several of each in my collection, both uprights and tanks. Also used to sell Electro-Hygiene and Galaxie Prestige back in the 70's. Hey Guys!

You all got me hot and bothered by all of this Royal and Electro Hygiene talk! LOL!

I just happened upon this thread after I was just fooling with my Electro Hygiene model 903 and guess what???? That nozzle also comes off just as easily! There is a metal rectangular plate held in place by a screw with lock washer. Simply remove the belt, then the screw/plate and viola, the nozzle comes off!

Now, Jeff and the rest of you guys....can you explain this? Morgan seems to think that they used older castings without the belt lifters. Could this be?

Louis...

I checked my Model 903 and it is flush and doesn't have a screw or lock washer. There doesn't appear to me anyway to remove the head. I have an early model 903 with an offwhite bag. The newer Model 903's had red bags. I know Jeff had a thread about the differences between the Model 903's several years ago. Morgan thanks in advance for the copy of the Model 980 manual.

Hey Lou,

I have seen some 903's with the nozzle held on with the plate, and others were held on with 3 screws through the fan case. Why they made them two different ways is beyond me. All 3 of my 903's have the 3 bolts, but I also have an 890 that is older than the 903 that has the plate.

I had one of these ..

That I traded in when I sold Kirby machines. It was complete with a portable handle small shake out bag, and red power cord with a switch built into the machine end of the cord, and full set of canister attachments. I have always liked Royal and had never heard of Electro Hygiene before this one. I assumed it was a Royal rebranded for a store like Sears and Monkey Wards used to rebrand their machines from other makers. I was also shocked that they had made the belt lifter and removable nozzle like Kirby. This is the only one I have ever seen, and have never seen the Royal counterpart. I assume Kirby came along and sued them over this obvious patent infringement, otherwise I'm sure they would be more plentiful.
