The newest member to my vacuum posse is this 28 I just arrived home with from an on the way home from work estate sale. Today was half price day so the $12 they were asking became $6. Plus got a few attachments with it too!

Whoa! That is a steal! Very very lucky find! I'm jealous!

I love my 28. Don't think I could ever part with it. But mine doesn't have the original bag or cord and the hood has a crack near the pedal. I payed $65 for it in a bid war on eBay!

Get it running right and it will run almost silently. It's my best running Hoover by far and cleans very well. I know you will love it.

Congrats again!

NOW WAIT A MINUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is that a metal hood I see????? Do tell! If it is that's a rare piece there!

Are you kidding me???

You are always finding great machines!

OK - here's the deal. Adopt me.

Age: 54

Appearance: Adorable

Attributes: Housebroken

Let me know,

Rick

PS: Even if the adoption thingy doesn't work out....it's STILL a great machine! Congratulations!

If you are willing to sleep next to the pile of vacuums vastly accumulating then you are more than welcome Rick

Does anyone know what the bag that is on this 28 is from? I know it is not original to this 28, but cannot seem to find what it was from...

When you have a chance, could you take a close-up shot of the bag? I think it is the original 28 bag. There were two or three variations of them over the years....John L.

Why are my ears burning???

My take on the situation is that:

• The original bags on Hoover 28s sported four tightly spaced, vertical pinstripes that, when the bag is mounted on the machine, appear to be a continuation of the striped trim that is unique to the 28's hood.

• The (very nice) bag on your machine is probably either a genuine Hoover replacement bag from the late 40s to early 50s, or, an original bag from a 27.

• It is not likely to be from a 60-series machine. The mouths on 60-series bags were of a different size and shape than those on the 20-series and all earlier full-size machines. Although it is possible to reshape the mounting bands on these bags and to force/convince them to fit on the 20-series "large-mouth" rings, it is not an easy thing to do. A longer mounting screw is almost always needed. If the bag fabric is at all deteriorated, it and/or the back seam can easily tear and there is always a small opening created just above the screw and just below where the seam begins. Also, 60-series shake-out bags had a fabric sleeve/muffler sewn into the mouth of the bag.

Thanks!

I thought it was a later replacement bag but wasn't sure, looks nice on the vacuum. Got my 28 from someone at the St. Louis convention, great vac!

P.S. Really Martin, what were you doing up so early?

Derek,

Nice 28! One of my favorite Hoover machines. I have one in my collection with the bakelite hood. My neighbor across the street has one that she received as a wedding present. Hers has the metal hood.

Now, be careful. Crevicetool claims to be housebroken......the jury is still out on that one!!!!!
