Hi folks

I'm new to vacuumland. Have read through a bunch of threads and appreciate all the good info!

I wanted to get some opinions on whether I should repair my 15 yr old Miele White Star - or bite the bullet and get a new canister. The White Star has really held up over the years. It has had a few repairs (including a couple of plug replacements) - and has many, many scratches. It has bravely sucked up fur from 2 Newfoundland dogs (that's alot of fur by the way) and pounds of grit and dirt from both tile floors and area rugs.

It seems to still be running fine - but the time has come to replace the hose, telescoping wand and upholstery brush (no way around this). So it looks like I'm in the $150.00+ range.

I'm not sure if it makes sense to put that much money in the unit - - or if I should just get a new one. If I replace it - I would likely go Miele canister.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

Cheers

The new miele canisters are great, however I actually prefer your series. We have had a red star for about 10 years and it has never given us any problems. Plus your machine shares many of the same attributes as the newer models. Same bag, tools, floor heads, features, etc. I have also found that the older mieles seemed to have just a little more suction than the new ones.

Personally, I would keep it.

Thanks Scott

I like the vacuum - it has met all my needs and has been really durable. I was just concerned that at 15 years old it might have some other problem in the wings.

Any other thoughts from folks?

Great forum!

Miele typically designs things around a 20 year life expectancy...

Is it worth justifying a few hundred dollars for a few more years, or spend double and get another 20 year unit?

I recommended a power nozzled Miele S8 to a friend who needed to replace a worn-out Kenmore power nozzle canister. He is extremely satisfied with his purchase even though it cost him close to CAD$1,000. The best thing about it is that it is so lightweight and easy to use. He got a 10 year warranty on it too...

On the cheaper end of things, I got a basic little Miele S2120 and I love it too! So easy to use and powerful....:-)
