Miele S512 Cat and Dog Plus Project

Well the hose went on my 1999 Henry a few months ago, managed to fix it though which saved money. I do feel Numatic are cheapening things, I doubt the parking slot is going to last very long in a Commercial Setting, either.

On the Miele theme again - I think they have lowered quality too compared to Miele's of old. I see a fair few modern Miele's on EBay for reasons like the lid wont stay closed, or they wont come on - more so with the S6 models. Flimsy lids and poor quality power dials are also complained about. Numerous S7 uprights have also been for spares or repair due to the overheat circuit cutting in and not resetting itself again, so rendering the vac unusable. S7's have also been guilty of plastics breaking off the bases and wheels falling off. I do think the S7 is far too fragile to stand up to hard use.

Lets see how long before the new S8 cylinder takes for them to appear for spares or repairs on Ebay. One thing is for sure - modern Miele's are cheaper to buy now, but they wont last 20 years that they are supposed to be tested for.

The reason why there are many Mieles on eBay is because owners don't use genuine bags, which is advised by Miele to do so. They end warping the sides of the bag door & ruining the machine completely eventually.

The best "old" style Miele I had was the black S571. Beautiful vacuum that. Well made, but by god, heavy to pull along and carry. I don't miss the heavy weight. But, utterly simple to use and of course a pleasure to vacuum with.

The S300 range is just a little lighter but not very different to the S500 range - both use the smaller FJM dust bag. The only problem my S381 had was that the tool door pinged off one day but it is easy to fix.

In 2004 there was an XXL model, the S812 which used the same kind of body style but slightly taller to accomodate the bigger GN series bag.

That clear miele is brilliant! Bet it looks horrible when the carbon brushes wear down after a few years though! Presume that never saw the UK?

From that to a much more boring one.

The parts were dry

Was really simple, just clip in modules really

I checked everything worked quickly before the final push

Yeey. Brake cleaner sorted the missing speeds out too. It's a little bit whiney when turning it off at the lowest setting though.

Clipped the sad reminder that it's only a base model back in!

My mums Miele used FJM bags so borrowed one until I get another box for it, and the expensive carbon filter...

Sure it wouldnt have worked this well when it arrived on Friday!

Still to get:
Service box
Carbon filter (or cage to tranform it into the cheap filter...)
Dusting brush (missed one yesterday that didnt sell for 99p, gutted!)
Extension Pole.

I won't use my clear Miele because I don't want it to get dirty inside considering it was put together with one safety screw that won't come out easy. It was only ever intended as a display piece to show how they are out together and sealed. They cost the dealer over here $175.75 and weren't to be sold, most yellowed if left in sunlight tho. Mine looks new, it was NIB when I got it.

I never realised Miele did a refurbished page on their website, their prices are at least 1/3 shaved off the retail price! Amazed!

Refurbished Miele?

Well its a new one on me. That would explain why in the last two years they are listing every kind of spare part going including springs, castor wheels and spare bin lids for the tools.

Once you get that Miele up and running, you could sell it to Hi-Lo.

Realised today that I had 3 Miele's in my collection, so had a quick photoshoot

Hi-Lo, some weights for you.

First, my Sensotronic System 2, which I consider heavy!

S512 above, which is the lightest (S4241 and S5210 both have over half full bags, and the S512 a brand new empty one but doubt that'll make much odds.)

Put mums tools on the S512 and ran it around. Even on 300w it was still quite powerful, could hear airflow from the brush. On full power it was almost un moveable!

turned it down to 700w again and did downstairs, and it's fully excellent once again! Just need to wait for stuff to turn up now, and buy the last few bits.

20 years, dunno about that! This one lasted probably 12-14 years, and whilst it wasnt dead, it wouldnt have been long. Abuse definatly does come into it though.

I haven't got space to keep it sadly, and as good as it is it doesn't do anything for me like a late 80s machine would.

At the moment money is more important, a sentiment shared I imagine by many here. One day maybe, but for now I'm enjoying these little projects and hoping to benefit from them!
