My household includes a cat, a golden retriever and three kids. We garden, so dirt sometimes gets tracked in. We have old carpeting and hardwood floors. I am looking at Miele Cat and Dog and the Riccar Vibrance. Which one would get our floors cleaner? Which one works better at removing cat fur from upholstery? Which one has a better repair record? Thank you very kindly!

I Cannot speak for the Riccar but have only heard good things. I have a Miele cat&dog, Its ok but heavy to use, Its got very good suction and the brush roll is very good at removing pethair but the turbine nozzle for upholstery is useless.I have 10 cats , 3 dogs and the bags fill up way faster than Miele says they will( its was one of 3 vacuum used in the house.) I gave it to my Mom who at first like it as it was so quiet. She also started to find it to heavy.

The biggest bugbear with it was the bag, It has never since new sealed properly meaning the bag compartment is always full of fine dust on the inside walls. It also means the Charcoal filter gets clogged and needs replacement ( expensive ). We also found the machine started to smell after a while, about 3-4 days after a new bag was fitted. I made a post on here about it and others expressed the same view.

Its not a bad machine but it has its faults. Like every vacuum out there.

Your real cost...

Isn't the initial price of the cleaner. It's the cost to maintain it. The Miele's bags are VERY expensive (five dollars each). You cannot replace just the cord if you run over it, you MUST replace the entire handle assembly ($125). When the Miele's brush roller bristles wear out (about five years) you must replace the entire brush bar (well over $100).

The Riccar is made in the USA, the bags are inexpensive (we sell them for less than $2 for the HEPA bags). Every part is replaceable without having to buy the 'assembly'. Both machines use a turbo brush for the pet hair, the Riccar's turbo brush is much less expensive.

It's ironic that Miele in Europe is LESS expensive than Dyson - but in America the Miele is positioned as "the BMW of vacuums" and everything is very expensive. Add up the cost to maintain the two machines, and the Riccar comes out the winner each time. If you want a better machine than the Vibrance, check out the Riccar model 8955.

I do not own either, but have used both several times... The Miele uprights are really good. They are solid, quiet and easy to use with the pull and go retractable wand that features a 12 foot hose I believe. You can also adjust the suction, which most uprights do not have that feature. It can be a little heavy if you are lugging it up several stairs or are smaller person. The Riccar is a quality vacuum as well, lesser known (marketed) and has strong brush roll agitation which picks up very well. It does not swivel like the Miele and you cannot adjust the suction. Also the hose and wand is not as convenient/refined as the Miele and its way louder. I believe the Riccar Vibrance is a tad lighter in weight though. If the weight is a concern, you might want to consider the Riccar or even better- the Sebo Felix! Reliability wise, the Miele is a good bet and the Riccar is decent, but have seen reviews and heard of motor burn out a common problem around five years of use or the tools dial on the back breaking/ loosening up. Overall I would recommend the Miele, Sebo then Riccar in that order.

I own a Aerus Guardian Upright, nice machine, but cumbersome with the separate attachments. I don't think its worth the price to recommend it, the above are better options. Good luck

If money was no object and based on the space of your home with your requirements, the SEBO D4 Premium would be a good bet if you want a canister. The PN alone would be able to be used on both hard floors and carpets and the long cord on this canister is a benefit - far more length than a Miele S8 canister vacuum. You also get more dust bags with SEBO in one of their packs compared to Miele.

I know you mentioned upright but the SEBO Felix has a smaller dust bag than the D series canisters.

The Riccar's suction is adjustable. There's a dial on the back of the machine. You can cut the suction in half for throw rugs.

I recommend a TriStar CS; it has a mini electric PN for vacing upholstery

Or a TriStar CXL & Wessel Werk HEB160 mini PN; you'll have a powerful vacuum & electric power nozzles (1 full-sized for carpets & 1 mini-sized for upholstery)[this post was last edited: 9/25/2013-23:09]

Riccar or Simplicity all the way. I recommend a canister style machine. They come with a wide array of attachments and have a long telescoping wand with bare floor brush that will leave your hardwood floors gleaming!! Very powerful, easy to use systems.

Mieles are good but very expensive. My experience with Sebo has not been positive. I find the power and cleaning performance of a Riccar or Simplicity or even Hoover Windtunnel canister to be significantly better over Sebo D4. Sebo filtration and build quality is great though.

I'll second the recommendation for Simplicity/Riccar. Tristar and Filter Queen are really solid options too. Personally I think the older Tristar CXL/DXL and Filter Queen K31X or 95X are somewhat superior to the new models, but the new ones are solid too. Another option that hasn't been mentioned is Lindhaus - I haven't used a Lindhaus canister, but I've heard very good things.

In my opinion a canister really is the best option, but if you want an upright, I'd look at the Riccar/Simplicity tandem air models. Unless, that is, you want an upright for the carpets and canister for everything else. In that case, I have to recommend a Royal. My mother just got one, and it does a better job on heavy, dense carpet that's packed with long dog hair than anything else I've used.

If U want upright just for carpets & canister for bare floors + above-floor I recommend:
Eureka The Boss 1934B
Hoover Guardsman (commercial Convertible)
Eureka Mighty Mite
Sanitaire SC888 with disposable bag system

Or just canister with power nozzle
Aerus/Electrolux
Rainbow
Filter Queen[this post was last edited: 9/27/2013-01:13]

I recommend the Vibrance because it does a great job on the cat hair in my house and the suction is adjustable and if you to get one I recommend getting the tool kit with the 12 foot hose.
