I have had a Magic Jack phone for three years. Initially it was a great service -- calls were clear, no dropped calls, very reliable voice mail and very reasonable cost.

However, all that has changed in recent months. I am having a lot of trouble with calls being disconnected right in the middle of a conversation or calls not coming in at all and sometimes voice mails not being received.

So I have decided to discontinue my Magic Jack service and just use my cell phone.

I don't really like that idea because sometimes cell service is spotty as well, and if there was a major emergency it would be good to have a back-up phone line. Plus, I like the symmetry of my number -- it's easy to remember. Maybe at some point I'll get a basic land line again for that purpose.

Meanwhile, if you have the number 864-556-0137 in any of your records or phone lists please delete it. If you need my cell phone number, contact me and I'll give it to you.

Of course, it goes without saying (but I'll say it anyway) that you should please not give out my phone number to anyone without checking with me first. Thanks.

I wonder if your Magic Jack device is going bad and just needs to be replaced. I had that happen with my U-Verse modem a few weeks ago.

Every time I call them I go through a big runaround, jumping through hoops etc. with them claiming the problem is my Internet service. Wrong. We have very fast and reliable service here. I finally got tired of 90% of my MJ calls getting dropped in the middle of a conversation.

Get and Ooma phone set. You've probably seen the ads on tv... It works great. #1 rated phone service by Consumer Reports. I've had ours now for about 2 years.. Had my Bell landline number switched over to it. It costs about $4 a month for the basic service which still has a lot of features.. I have the Premier service.. $10 a month.. free calling all over N. America, voice mail, call waiting, name/number display and absolutely theee best call blocking system ever. I never get a robo call anymore plus you can add any phone number to your "blacklist" they'll never get thru. It can reroute your incoming calls directly to your smart phone if you want or it does it automatically if your internet goes down. With the premier service they give you 2 phone numbers.. your old one if you want to keep it and then you can pick a 2nd phone # from any area code in USA or Canada.. My second number is a local NY number in the town where my relatives live, they just dial that "local" number and my phone here in Canada rings. They have an app you can dowload onto your smart phone or Ipad and it lets you make free calls from any wifi hot spot in the world.. Friends just did this from their cruise ship somewhere out in the Caribbean. They love it too. Lots more features.. They're always on sale for $100 or less. Just plug your regular old home phone into it.. or your cordless set.. and you're set to go pretty much.. set up is simple. I also got the wire less adaptor for mine since my modem and everything is down in the furnace room.. it lets you plug the Ooma in, anywhere in the house. I've never had a problem with it in 2 years and the call quality is very very good. http://www.ooma.com/

Forgot to mention..

I had a Magic Jack before the Ooma but it wasn't that great, not good enough to make me get rid of my landline.. The Ooma definitely is.

I 2nd that

If any of you listen to the radio show Clark Howard - he recommends OOMA too. Based on what I've read, it's miles better than magic jack.

I don't need land line personally because I have unlimited calls on my cell or I would probably have it.

I've had my Ooma for years, love it. I did have to have ATT install a "Dry Loop" on my internet only line. It was free and it will move with me to new mini manse.

Another reason I want a land line is because I don't like carrying a cell phone with me all around the place. But if I leave it in my bedroom I can't hear it ringing in the front of the apartment. My land line has three cordless phone extensions -- bedroom, bathroom & living room and a yellow rotary phone in the hallway. That way, I don't have to go running to get to the phone if it's ringing.

The facts Ma'am . . .

My magicJack GO usually disconnects calls after 90-minutes, in order to reduce network congestion from users that forget to hang up after their conversation ends. YES, it happens more than you think! I just hit re-dial and I'm good for another 90-minutes.

Also: Is your mJ plugged into your computer or DIRECTLY into your router like I do mine, where the voice quality is CD Quality from whet I'm told by people on the other end of the call ? ? ?

Other than their CHEEZY SUPPORT, I honestly have to say that I LIKE my magicJack GO for 3 bucks a month, because when I renew every year I simply go to Walmart and buy a brand new mJ for the same cost as renewing the service with the old device ~ ~ ~

magicJack throughout the house . . .

Also, If you have your magicJack plugged DIRECTLY into your router using the included USB Power Supply, with Ma Bell already DISCONNECTED from your house, simply connect an RJ11 cable between the mJ and the closest RJ11 wall outlet to use your existing phones in all rooms in your house, as you did with your landline . . .

MJ was plugged into the router and all land-line phones were connected to it. I had a 1-to-2 jack where one cord went to the cordless phone base and the other to the rotary phone. So it worked just like a regular land line.
