Great Vacuum !

Love it. It was the first vacuum I collected back in the 50's when
I was about 9 or 10. My dad got it for me at an Auction.
It was minus the wooden grip ( I am assuming ). Used it to vacuum
an old living room rug we had in the basement. Finally found it's
way to the trash. Sure wish I had it later on when my collection
was in it's prime !

Yes, I found it

Here in good old Pomona calif. Strange, I found the Electro-Hygeien only a few days earlier. I wonder what I'll come across next!

The Singer R-1 was made by General Electric. There were three versions, one was the Singer (highly styled), one was the GE model 111, and one was the Premier Grand. All three shared the same chassis and motor and brush roller (backwards revolving so as not to seize the carpet fringe). The difference was in the cloth bags, switch (Singer was 2 speed, GE was one speed), and top motor cover.

Were those Singer vacuums ever popular, I wonder?  There don't seem to be too many around these days, but that is never a true representation of their popularity 60+ years ago, of course.

Well...

I find old vacuums here and there really, sometimes at thrift stores, other times at antique stores, and there is always ebay. I'm not sure if these were ever popular, but something tells me that these were costly when new. I think one of the reasons that these Singer cleaners are so uncommon is that they are VERY stylized. So, it wouldn't take long for them to be considered HORRENDOUSLY "Out-of-date", making them an easy target as a "trade-in" towards a new vacuum. But this is just my theory.
