So, during a discussion occasioned by my loaning an extra Lux 1205 to my neighbor's husband for remodeling work he was doing on his late father's house (just around the corner), his pleasant but rather foolish wife was bragging about her beloved Kirby and how much more suction(she believed) it had/has relative to the Electrolux. After I picked myself off the floor and having nearly wet my pants, we settled on a bet for dinner at a semi-local and very nice restaurant to be paid for by the LOSER of the vacuum contest. The decision will be based solely on the reading of a vacuum meter/gage (calibrated in inches of water lift)when placed at the end of the hose. She has promised to bring said Kirby in (their residence is about 60 miles inland)this coming Wednesday. I will accurately post the results of that up-coming contest shortly after her eyes are dried and her mascara reapplied. At this point, I am trying to decide between the lamb or the chicken picatta, both of which are outstanding at this Long Beach restaurant. While I will affirm my commitment that no vacuums will be harmed during the comparison of the two, I can make no similar promise as to her ego! (After all, it is an Electrolux we are talking about.) Nah, I'm not as big of a Kirby nut as I used to be, ever since one of those nasty Kirby salesmen ripped me off.

I like pretty much all vintage brands like Electrolux, Eureka, Hoover, Compact, GE, (still) Kirby, etc.

Fred, my Mamma didn't raise no dummy! The terms were strictly spelled out as "Suction Only." Had cleaning been the issue, I would ahve antied up with a HOOVER Upright!

Alex, I am sorry you got ripped off by anyone; that always sucks (no pun intended!) I enjoy several of the major food groups as well but my feet are firmly planted in Hoover and Electrolux terra firma.

Tell you what happened at a vac shop!!!!

I used to work at in the early 80s,We sold ,Princess,Turbotronic ,Airway and Panasonic , One day a Rainbow distributor stopped in to ask the shop owner if he was interested in some trade ins,during the conversation the Rainbow man bragged about how much more powerful his new D-3 was than any " Bojack", my boss being the crafty old vac guy he was challenged him to a suction contest, the dumb Rainbow guy didn't have any better sense, so while he went to his car to get a new machine,my boss quickly put 2 cones in a new Princess,and plugged it in,at that time the Princess was I think 349.00 or something near that, the new D3 was ,"And I know this to be true, because I sold a few for our local dealer" 749.95, so anyway, the guy came in,filled up his water pan, plugged up the " Mudpot" as my boss called it,they then hooked the 2 hoses end to end,my boss let the foolish salesman turn the Rainbow on first,...then with a wink, turned on the Princess...well,instantly it DRAINED the water pan ,and damn near stopped the whimpy D3, a thoroughly embarrased salesman, grabbed up his machine and left,then there was the matter of a wet Princess with plastered on cones to clean up, but it was worth it!!!!

Sounds like my upcoming contest with a friend ...

However our contest is between a Royal Powercast and my Kirby G4. It is based on cleanability. I installed a brand new pet lovers brushroll, and new Hepa bag in my Kirby that I bought from Bill (A007kirbyman). My Kirby is going to clean circles around that Powercast!

@jfalberti - As for Kirby vs. Powercast, you're gonna have some heavy-duty competition there. The Powercast is quite a beast and has awesome suction power! Which model is it? The top of the line model, the RY9200, has a two-stage motor and, as Hans Craig would say, "Will suck dry paint right off the wall!"

(n.b., a two-stage motor has two spinning fans with one stationary fan between them, greatly increasing the suction power and air flow. There are also three-stage motors - most central vacuum systems have them.)

Hans, the 'Mud-pot' vs F.Q. is a great story! Thanks for sharing.
And of course there is the legendary story of the over-zealous (Kirby?) salesman outside of St Louis who unwittingly plugged his cleaner into an unmarked 220-Volt outlet (known but undisclosed by the 'homeowner'/protaganist!) and watched his beloved demonstrator self-destruct and loose that bet!) I do not have the chutzpah to do that, unless of course it was a Dirt-Devil or some-such plastic P.O.S.

It is the middle of the line model. I helped him get bags and a new belt for it a few months ago. Don't get me wrong, I love pre-TTI Royals, but if I had a choice between a Kirby and a Royal, I'd take the Kirby. I know my Kirby will give the Powercast a run for it's money. The only thing I don't like about this test is cutting open a brand new Hepa bag to see the results. I have a few of the paper Micron Magic bags so perhaps I should use one of those instead.

@jfalberti 'It is the middle of the line model' -- Ah, the RY9100, with the maroon bag chamber and accents. That's the same one I got because I thot it was the prettiest. Did not know at the time that the RY9200 had a two-stage motor or I would have gotten that one. Not that the 9100 isn't more than powerful enough, it's just a matter of, to paraphrase a cliché, "More is more!" It's really too bad that the Powercast was such a flop. It's so beautiful AND powerful. But the weight and size really turned a lot of users against it.


Bringing this back on-thread, I hope all-y'alls who are having "sweep-offs" will let us know the results!!
