Legend II Rear Axle

I got my Legend II back together this afternoon. Everything functions well, but I'm having trouble with the rear axle. It was bent when I got it, like it had been dropped on its rear wheels, and the head of one of the screws sheared off. I was able to extract the rest of the screw, and used a couple of sheet metal screws I had on hand to put the new axle on. Now, it looks like the heads of one of the new screws has sheared off, as well.

So, I'm not sure what to do now. One thought I'm having is to drill through to the other side of the housing, and run a longer screw through the axle, and secure it with a nut on the top.

Don't make hole bigger. Put jb weld on it try to put something that can hold the screw basically jb weld a screw in the hole but don't make it bigger a screw to fix a screw to fix a hole it's never ending.

Bryan,

Believe it or not, the Legend II was the last Kirby that the shake out bag was an optional feature for (and obviously, not many civilians bought it that way), and this is why two different rear axles were available.

The long 6" axle was used if these machines had the standard Mini Emtor (disposable bag system), but those machines ordered with the shake out bag would have used the short 4.5" axle.

The exact replacement screws you need are given as part number 102269 by Kirby.

If you think you're having trouble removing them, try an impact driver with an "E-Z Out" bit.
