We received a wonderful Christmas gift from a friend who has a house in Hawaii: a big bag of 100% REAL Kona Coffee.

Kona coffee comes from small colony of coffee plantations on the tropical Kona Coast on the big island of Hawaii. Some of the finest coffee on earth comes from this area. Kona coffee bushes thrive on the cool slopes of the Mauna Loa Mountains which are rich in volcanic soil and receive morning sun and afternoon cloud cover. This growing environment gives Kona coffee an advantage over any other coffee grown in other parts of the world.

I love coffee and I especially love Kona. But it's very expensive and hard to find even in Los Angeles. What is often labeled as "Kona" is actually a blend of Kona with other coffees: Sometimes the amount of Kona beans is less than 10 percent. Trader Joe's carries 100% Kona but its quality varies and is sometimes bitter.

Anyway, here is a Real Kona Coffee Purist enjoying a cup of that liquid gold, made from freshly ground beans and gently brewed in a vintage General Electric percolator.

-ooOoo-

For New Year's breakfast, I made a batch of fried rice from leftover brown rice. I added egg, sausage, mixed vegetables, scallions and garlic. I had some along with half a grapefruit that our friend Sylvia gave us (the sweetest grapefruit I've ever had), and a big cup of Kona coffee. Sarap! Segay pa!
