Does anyone know if Kirby used #10 flat washers for the wheels on models C to 515? The reason I think they are #10 size washers is because the screws for the wheels are also #10 size.

The early models C through the 508 had washers. The 509 was the first to use the lager screw heads without the washers. The 516 was the first to use the Phillips screws. You can barely see the washers behind the larger screw heads... like yours here. I hope these pictures help showing the three different screw types with the washer.

Thank you! I never knew that the toe-touch control and rear axle shaft on models 508 and back had the smaller holes for the #8 screws. This bit of trivia really makes me want to find a 1948 or older Kirby service manual!
Kirby did the same thing with the front axle clamp screws when the 516 was replaced by the 517, by using larger screws to hold them in -- in this case, the holes at the bottom of the fan case for these two clamp screws were now #8 size instead of #6.

when did they start using the escutcheon screws on the wheels? I'm guessing when they started using wider wheels. Were the first to use the wide wheels the classic 1cr?

Ben, on models where wheel washers were used, do you know if they came painted to match trim? I've seen a couple #500 series models with red painted washers, which I really like and was just curious if that was done originally or not. Billy

In my research the very early models were painted. Having said that I have never seen original red painted washers on a Kirby yet. I have painted some of my washers red just to give them a little more pop value.

Very nice touch indeed. Your wheels look great too! I think if I gathered all of my early 500's I might be able to come up with a round of good wheels for one machine! Is there anything that I could put on these wheels to help preserve what's left of them?

That's a great question, I clean the wheels well sometimes using SOS pads to remove deep dirt Then rinse them off and dry, then wipe them down with a little Original Armor All. I spray it on a clean rag or paper towel then wipe them down making sure to remove any excess Armor All for a good clean even look.
