Why did Kirby "discontinue" the ash gray color for the DE? I tried getting an OEM cord for the DE but they only come in black now? What's up with that?

Stock

The replacement for 505-d80 replacement is black. Im not sure but I think the black heritage is OEM replacement for cr1 to legend 2. Since the avalir has a black cord it falls In line with all OEM cords. You still can find them on eBay for diamond.

Kirby discontinues the colors of trim pieces after every line ends their support cycle to prevent people from selling junky old Kirbys as brand new ones with OEM parts at full price.

You can still get the parts on eBay or try your local Kirby vacuum store when this coronavirus is over.

It's also a cost containment measure. It's cheaper to stock only one color and black pretty much goes with everything. But as huskyvacs said, other colors are readily available on eBay.

Thanks

Thanks to everyone who replied. I am going to get the black OEM cord because the customer says that she doesn't care what color, as long as it works. Can't argue with that!

Before you order the genuine, I know certain distributors make an aftermarket Generation series cord in black. Works the same, just doesn't have the Kirby logo on the plug.

It seems like they did that all the time:

In my 1959 Kirby service manual, only the red attachments (those used since the 516) were offered for models 515 and back.

And in my 1974/1977 Kirby service manual, the tan tools and other trim pieces (models 562, Sanitronic VII and Dual Sanitronic 50) were the ones to use for the 500 series.
