I have a G-5 that i am considering sending to kirby for the rebuild program, I called them today and they told me that it could be done for anywere from 175 to 225, plus shipping, the vacuum is is good condition, and cleans great, i only use it for a fast pick up, when i dont feel like seting up the rainbow. i was looking at kirby's site today and seen the example they have on the rebuild page and it made me want to send mine in cause it has lost its shine, i started polishing it several months ago and just have not had a chance to finish it, working on the new house takes up all of my spare time, so they told me that they would change the outter bag, polish, change the trim, service all the electical, and put on a new cord. so has anyone done this latly and is it worth it? i think having this one all shined up and "looking new" it may curve my wnat for a brand new kirby... I've had it bad wanting the new Kirby and new Rainbow... I drool at the new rainbow's! so let me know what the thoughts are on the rebuild! =)

so whats included in the service of the motor itself..whats replaced and whats reconditioned.
ive heard that the g5 is a great unit ...and with a full polishing and clean up/restore you may not see the need for a new one...
a few on the forum have done a restore on there g series...id look at those to get a better idea...the ones ive seen here are beautiful.

Not if it's gonna cost him $200+
Better be carefull though, sometimes those rebuilds
come back as franken-kirbys.

I am not sure what is rebuilt or replaced on the motor, i should have asked that question. I am not the original owener, i picked this one up at the flea market about a year ago. I am going to call Kirby back today and ask somemore questions and get them to send me the info. ill be sure to take before and after pics for comparison

details

its your money...so ask questions. get details..even if you gotta call back several times....ask around the forum about what they didnt like about their recondition expierence...jot it down and address those issues when you call....this way you get no 'surprises'

Well, you're over 21, which means you're entitled to make what you feel is an informed decision. Judging from what I've heard here about the horrors of getting back a frankenvacuum (plus the exhorbitant cost) I would say you're either better off buffing it yourself or having a mom & pop vacuum store do it. I know I'd be livid if I sent them my 1C for the rebuild and it came back with all Sanitronic trim! You don't even get to keep the original serial number plate!

Rebuilding Kirbys

1) The rebuilds for the terms stated, are for the ORIGINAL purchaser ONLY.

2) The rebuilds are to restore luster, appearance, performance & longevity for the ORIGINAL purchaser.

The rebuilds are NOT for collecting & restoring purposes. [[ Which I am doing, so I understand from that perspective. ]] What you might do, is POLITELY ask if the 'original' parts could be returned, as you are a collector.

The rebuild does NOT say parts will be replaced with 'identical' parts. Parts will be replaced with currently manufactured parts. (The answers you are looking for (which parts are replaced) are in the rebuild flyer.) If you are NOT the original owner, then this is null & doesn't apply.

Name me another company (particularly vacuums) who stands behind their product like Kirby does, will you?

Ive Decided

that i would just work on polishing it my self, I just cant see spending 350.00 to have it polished casue my kirby runs great, it just has gotten tarnished...( i want the new rainbow too bad, or at least a two speed model!) i actually got started on it last night.. i had purched a bench grider and tried to polish a older machine using that but seems like i was make more progress with mothers, so ill just stick to what i know! Thank Ya'll for all the comments and advise! I really enjoy reading everyone's post and Seeing all the machines!
